The George Hotel

Devonshire Street, Penrith, CA11 7SU
The George Hotel Outside

On the 15th of November in 1745, Charles Edward Stuart, leader of the Jacobite rebellion, also known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, successfully took the city of Carlisle as part of his march towards London. That evening, he headed to Penrith, where he spent the night at the George and Dragon Inn. Sadly for Charlie, his success would be short-lived, and he would eventually fail in his efforts to restore his family to the throne. However, his chosen accommodation in Penrith would have a much brighter future, eventually becoming the George Hotel, which still offers rest to weary travellers to this day.

The hotel, located in the centre of Penrith has come a long way since it hosted the Young Pretender, and although much of the charm and quirky nature of this Georgian building remains, it is brimming with all the modern comforts that guests desire. The hotel is just a few minutes’ walk to Penrith’s shops, and approximately 15-minutes’ drive from the shores of Ullswater.

Restaurants & Bars

The George is home to one restaurant and two bars. The Devonshire Restaurant serves lunch and evening meals. Many of the dishes use locally sourced produce, such as Lakeland lamb or Solway fish, and the menu is proudly British in its inspiration. Breakfast is served in the Lounge, which is also open throughout the day for both light bites and main meals, as well as hot drinks, scrumptious cakes, and alcoholic beverages. Whilst the Lounge has a very traditional feel, Dappers Bar is much more modern, and provides a sophisticated setting for a cocktail or something more substantial.

Additional Facilities & Services

The George Hotel has four meeting rooms available to hire with the largest able to accommodate up to 150 people. These venues are available for conferences and celebratory events such as weddings, and the hotel also has a civil wedding licence.
