May half term is a brilliant time to visit the Lake District with your children. Spring is fully in bloom and the area is brimming with wildflowers. The woodland canopy is rich with shades of green, but not so heavy that the sunlight is blocked out entirely. Lambs, foals, calves, and even crias (baby alpacas) can be seen in the farm fields. The Lake District is one giant adventure playground, and this half term, there is plenty to keep the family occupied.

A carnival atmosphere will be coming to the grounds of Muncaster Castle this half term with the return of the annual Muncaster Festival. Featuring the International Jesters Tournament, the festival will see performers battle it out to become the Fool of Muncaster 2018. There is fun for the whole family throughout the event, with circus shows and workshops, live music, outdoor theatre, archery, craft workshops for children, bouncy castles, face painting, and a fabulous selection of food and drink stalls.

Lowther Castle is encouraging everyone to get active and get outdoors during this half term with Action Week. This week long event will see the castle grounds host numerous activities that will get you and your children active. Along with an outdoor trail, there will be workshops and challenges in football, golf, den building, campfire cooking, archery, Nordic walking, and much more. Some events are included in the entrance fee, others have small additional charges.

Carly Harding from Lakes Yoga will be leading a free, guided session during the afternoon of the 29th May in the Foyle Room that is located opposite Dove Cottage. The session is aimed at families with children aged 5-11, whilst younger children can be occupied in an adjoining room with a number of craft and play activities. As well as relaxation techniques and Yoga stretches, the session will involve games and stories.

Fancy a few days off from looking after the kids? Why not drop them off at the Whinlatter Adventure Club, allowing you time to treat yourself, perhaps with a spa day or a shopping spree. The club is open for children aged 7-12 years old and involves a fantastic range of outdoor activities that will delight and entertain – all led by experienced and qualified professionals. The club costs £60 for three days and children will need to bring their own packed lunch. Advanced booking is required.

Grasmere Gallop & Teddy Dash: 2nd June, 2018

The Grasmere Gallop is now in its 32nd year, and is a fundraising event led by the National Trust. The day sees a series of running events taking place around Grasmere. For those who are more experienced, 10k and 17k trails are available. Families with older children may wish to try the 5.7k trail either by walking or running.

Alternatively, the Teddy Dash that takes place on the Grasmere sports field gives children the opportunity to race over various obstacles with their teddy bears. Entry fees apply and you must enter all events by the 27th May.

Keswick Market Superheroes & Villains: 26th May, 2018

The centre of Keswick hosts a lively market each Saturday with around 70 stalls, many of which sell local produce and crafts. During the May bank holiday weekend, the market is holding a special Superheroes and Villains day. Visitors are invited to dress up as their favourite superhero or villain and enjoy the fun. There will awards for the best dressed, as well as live music, a treasure hunt, street performers, and face painting.

Silloth Green is a lovely place to visit with children, being home to a splash park, a play area, a rose garden, a BMX track and more. Each year, the community holds a fun day on the green. This free event includes a fun fair, craft stalls, live music, a family dog show, children’s entertainment, donkey rides, and numerous other activities.

Throughout half term, the Rheged Centre is holding a Superhero and Spy week. There will be various activities for children on a superhero or spy theme, including a comic book workshop led by artist Sheryl Jenkins, where children will be able to create their own comic book. Spiderman will be making an appearance throughout the week, with photo opportunities available. Children can design their own Lego superhero minifigure, and there will be face painting sessions available.

In the evenings, screenings of Marvel’s Black Panther will be shown in the cinema, which is suitable for older children. In addition, the centre is hosting a number of other family friendly events, including the ongoing Peter Rabbit exhibition, archery workshops, and children’s theatre.

The Ullswater Steamers have teamed up with the Cumbria Wildlife Trust and the Penrith & District Red Squirrel Group to create a series of activities that celebrate the wildlife in and around Ullswater. The events that include wildlife trails, talks, and craft activities, are all free, and take place at the pier office at Glenridding. From there, you can take a stroll towards Aira Force, or hop on board a steamer for a tour around the lake.
