Spring has well and truly sprung here in the Lake District with the first of the Herdwick lambs making their appearance. April might be the month of showers, but that shouldn’t put you off a visit to the National Park. We have plenty of indoor events to keep you entertained and dry, or you can simply pack your waterproofs and embrace the rain.

April starts with Easter Sunday and the school Easter holidays. Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake continues to offer a packed programme of events this April. Hymn To Love celebrates the life of Edith Piaf with mesmerising performances of her classic hits by Olivier Award-nominated actress Elizabeth Mansfield. A Streetcar Named Desire revives Tennessee William’s classic play that tells the story of the troubled Blanche and her fiery relationship with her brother-in-law. Charles Dicken’s classic masterpiece is brought to the stage in Great Expectations.

Here I Belong is a unique performance that sees the stage transformed into a village hall. The play tells the story of Elsie and her village life over six decades all taking place in the hall and the audience are sat Cabaret style as though they were part of a village hall event. Saving Jason tells the tale of a family struggling with a troubled son, whilst Rossini’s classic The Barber of Seville is performed by the Swansea City Opera.

Fairy & Dragon World Returns to Hayes Garden World, Ambleside

Last year, Hayes Garden World’s family friendly event was incredibly popular, winning many awards. The centre has therefore decided to bring it back for this year. Part of the garden centre will be transformed into an enchanted forest where there will be dragon eggs and fairy doors to find, games to play, and fairy snacks to try.

Each child will receive a free gift and there is the chance to get a photo keepsake as part of the experience. Advanced booking is advisable as this event is once again expected to be very popular.

Throughout April, visitors to the Wordsworth Museum at Dove Cottage in Grasmere will be able to explore this intriguing exhibit that explores 19th century needlework. Dorothy Wordsworth is known to have been an accomplished seamstress, having written about her creations and repairs in her various journals. Dorothy’s harp-shaped needle case that will be on display. The exhibition has been created by the Crewel Work Company who will be also be supplying contemporary needlework pieces as part of the exhibit.

The Upfront Puppet Theatre and Gallery is the brainchild of artist John Parkinson, who together with his wife, has created an idyllic space that celebrates art and provides delightful performances suitable for all ages. This April, the theatre is hosting the Stanelli’s Super Circus, with all of the circus tricks and roles performed by puppets. This is a unique opportunity to see one of the largest puppet circuses in Europe.

Charity Dog Walk, Grizedale Forest

Local children’s author, Fay Lakin, and her faithful companion and literary inspiration, Wilson, the English Springer Spaniel, have teamed up with Cumbrian Cottages to create a charity dog walk at Grizedale Forest in order to raise money to support Coniston Mountain Rescue.

This is a free event but donations to the cause will be requested. There will be a photography competition during the walk with a chance to win a Forestry Commission Discovery Pass. The walk is two-miles long and will take you through Grizedale Forest. Participants will also receive a free hot drink.

Path to Adventure provide bespoke outdoor adventure holidays around the Lake District. This April, the company are hosting a week-long programme of events for families, beginning on Monday, 2nd April with a family fun day that includes a canoe trip on Lake Windermere and the chance to learn some bushcraft skills.

Throughout the week, there are opportunities to try rock climbing, ghyll scrambling, and fell walking. Places are limited and advanced booking is required. Equipment will be provided, but you will need to supply your own weather and activity appropriate clothing and footwear.

Brockhole Family Ramble, Lake Windermere

Start your children walking the right way with this interactive family ramble at Brockhole. Taking you on a 4km long stroll, Brockhole’s volunteer guide will teach you about the local landscape and what safety measures you need to take when setting out on a hike.

The walk will take around 2 and half hours and there are moderate ascents and descents. The route is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs. Participants will need to be dressed appropriate with good shoes. There are a limited number of places available, so do arrive early to secure your place.

Eycott Hill, on the eastern edge of the Lake District, offers breath-taking views that can inspire and stimulate the imagination. The reserve is maintained by the Cumbria Wildlife Trust who have teamed up with local writer Geraldine Green, a published poet and writer-in-residence at Brantwood House. Together they are offering a creative writing workshop where Geraldine will encourage participants to use the stunning surroundings of Eycott Hill as inspiration.

This all-day event will take place partly in Mungrisdale Village Hall and partly at the reserve itself, so waterproof clothing and walking boots will be required. Tea and coffee will be available at the hall, but you will need to bring lunch and drinks for whilst you are at the reserve. Advanced booking is essential.

Along with magnificent lakes and extraordinary mountains, Cumbria is home to the last producer of hand-blown and hand-cut glass crystal. Cumbria Crystal’s products are found in British embassies around the world and used by the Royal family. They offer the chance for a small number of people to learn more about their art in one day workshops that require no prior experience of the craft.

During this workshop, you will learn about the different cutting wheels used and how designs are created. You will also get the opportunity to create your own design and transfer it onto two hi-ball tumblers for you to take away. There are just four spaces on the course, ensuring that you will receive an excellent level of supervision and assistance.

The Lake District fells provide some of the most spectacular opportunities for landscape photography, but if you don’t know how to use anything other than the Auto function on your camera, then you could be missing out on some truly beautiful images. This workshop at the delightful spa hotel, Armathwaite Hall, is led by local professional photographer Carmen Norman.

Carmen will teach you about the functions of the camera and the best ways to get the perfect image, with a practical session in the hotel’s stunning lakeside grounds. You will need to provide your own DSLR camera and a tripod. Lunch and refreshments are provided.

The Pantaloons are a critically acclaimed touring theatre company who draw from a number of theatre traditions to create quirky and fun performances that engage the imagination. This April, they will be presenting a unique adaptation of HG Well’s classic science fiction tale, The War of the Worlds. Using music, puppetry, and a pinch of anarchy, this show will depict interplanetary warfare in a manner never seen before.

Derwent Island House Open Day, Derwent Water, Keswick

Built by local eccentric, Joseph Pocklington (whose memory lives on each year in the annual Derwent Water Regatta) in the 18th century, Derwent Island House is now owned by the National Trust.

The Trust let the house out to tenants, but open it up for just five days per year for visitors to look around and learn more about the island’s history. This April, the house will open to visitors for the first time in 2018. Access is via a canoe trip across the lake, led by a qualified instructor. Because of the nature of the journey, visitors must book their timed slot in advance. This event is not suitable for children under the age of 8 years.

The Gin Society Festival, the Old Fire Station, Carlisle

The Gin Society host gin festivals across northern England and, in April, they are once again returning to Carlisle to celebrate all things gin. During the weekend, festival-goers will be able to choose from over 120 gins.

On arrival, you will be given a gin guide and a limited edition glass, and you will be able to buy vouchers to then use at the various gin bars around the festival. Along with a huge range of gins and mixers, Prosecco Gin cocktails will be available. Entertainment will be provided throughout by resident DJs who will aim to create a mellow atmosphere.

One of the most memorable images from the 2015 floods caused by Storm Desmond was the sight of the old railway path bridges that connected Keswick to Threlkeld washed away in the river. The path remains impassable but the National Park Authority have created a fund-raising appeal to rebuild and reconnect this much loved walking route.

Threlkeld Village Hall are hosting a concert of live folk music to try and raise funds for this appeal. There will be a bar on the night, as well as a raffle with fabulous prizes to be won.

This April, explore the night sky with professional astronomer, Robert Ince, who was previously the manager of the Dark Sky Observatory in Galloway and now works with the Northumberland International Dark Sky Park.

Robert and a team of local astronomers will help you spot a fascinating range of celestial objects at Grizedale Forest, using powerful telescopes and binoculars, and it is anticipated that visitors may also witness some of the Lyrid meteor shower. Booking is essential.

Ulverston Walk Fest, South Lakes

Ulverston Walk Fest April 2018

The Ulverston Walk Fest has taken place each year since 1999 and is a ten-day festival that provides low cost guided walks around the southern Lake District. There are two or three walks taking place each day and they are graded easy, moderate, and hard, so there is something to suit most abilities.

Almost all of the walks require no advanced booking, but there are a couple that have a limited number of places, so do check in advance if this is the case. All walks cost £3 per person, which is an incredible value for money when compared to similar experiences offered by adventure companies.
