Askham Outdoor Swimming Pool

Askham Swimming Pool, Askham, CA10 2PN

Think of the Lake District and you probably think of rugged scenery, endless hiking possibilities, and glorious boat trips on lakes housed in amphitheatres of fells. You probably don’t associate this stunning national park in the north west of England with a leisurely swim in an outdoor pool, yet at Askham, a small village close to Penrith, you can do just that. With two heated pools, plenty of surrounding space to run around, and a kiosk, this is a great place to spend a few hours when the weather is pleasant.

The Pools

There are two pools at Askham – both are outside and adjacent to one another. The main pool is 20m long, has four lanes and is 2m deep at the deep end. The second smaller pool is very shallow with a stepped entry, making it ideal for young children. Both pools are heated, so you can swim throughout its season. There are changing rooms with shower facilities, and a lifeguard is on duty at all times.

The pool is usually open from May until September, in the afternoons on weekdays between 2pm and 6pm, and at weekends between 12pm and 6pm. In addition, early morning sessions are often available, as well as Friday evening pool parties. As this is a community run facility that relies on volunteers, it is best to check in advance of your visit to confirm that the pool is open.

Pool Hire

Want exclusive use for a party or just want to have the place to yourself? Private hire is available for £50 per hour and includes a lifeguard. BBQ hire is also available.

Other Features

The pools, located in the centre of Askham, have grassed areas surrounding them, with some benches. There is a kiosk that serves light refreshments and ice cream, and you are more than welcome to bring your own picnic, providing that you clear up after yourselves. Askham itself is a lovely historic village and there are a number of attractions nearby, including Lowther Castle and the Rheged Centre.
