Macdonald Swan Hotel

The Macdonald Swan Hotel is a beautiful former coaching inn built in 1650 and is one of the oldest hotels in the Lake District. It was immortalised in 1805 when William Wordsworth, perhaps the Lake District’s most famous ever resident mentioned it in his poem ‘The Waggoners’. The hotel sits on the outskirts of the picturesque village of Grasmere and nestles in the stunning Cumbrian countryside and enjoys spectacular views over the fells.

Restaurant and Bar

The Macdonald Swan Hotel’s aim is to treat guests to the finest of traditional Lakeland favourites with a modern twist and it does this with an ever increasing selection of organic and locally produced ingredients. There are three areas to enjoy delicious food and drink in the hotel. The Lounge is an informal and comfortable area where you can wine and dine and then sink back into one of its luxurious wing backed armchairs. The Waggoners Rest is the hotel’s flagship restaurant, and the Walkers’ Bar is the hotel’s traditional pub and a haven for both hotel guests and locals alike.

The Macdonald Swan Hotel features a number of informal meeting areas perfect for conferences and other business events. It is also a popular wedding venue with a choice of reception suite, lounge, or marquee and exclusive use of the hotel can be arranged. 

The hotel does not have a spa or fitness facilities on-site but all guests are entitled to complimentary use of its sister hotel the Macdonald Old England Hotel’s facilities. Situated nearby on Lake Windermere, the spa features a technogym, spa, 20m-indoor pool, as well as a range of therapies.
