The start of 2018 been one of the coldest winters we have had here for a while, so as we wait for the last of the snow to melt away and spot the daffodils emerging from their long sleep we look to the warmer months and the opportunities they will bring. After the long dark month of January, February sees the gradual march of spring take hold. The last of the snowdrops fade away and are replaced with emerging crocuses, primroses, and daffodils. Days start to be noticeably longer, but warm layers are required as snow is still likely. January is typically the quietest month here in the Lake District with a number of tourist attractions closed for the season. However, if you want a quiet short break away, perhaps to recover from the excess of the Christmas period, then now is the time to visit. Accommodation is cheap with many hotels offering significant discounts, particularly if you book for more than one night. January is also the coldest month of the year, which can lead to stunning wintry scenery.

Christmas is less than three weeks away and here in the Lake District we are getting pretty excited. Already we have had our first snow fall on the fells, creating the perfect setting for Santa’s arrival, and the towns and villages have been illuminated with Christmas lights. Various festive markets have taken place or are due to happen over the next couple of weeks, providing a fantastic Christmas shopping opportunity.

December is a magical time here in the Lake District, as businesses and attractions bring out the decorations and light up for Christmas. Many of this month’s events are, of course, focused around the festive season, with the man in red making so many appearances inquisitive young minds might start to question his legitimacy!

We love Christmas here in the Lake District. The fell tops are dusted with snow, the inns are warmed with cosy log fires, and our towns and villages are lit with sparking Christmas lights, all combining to create a real-life winter wonderland that is difficult to rival. With Father Christmas making numerous appearances around the national park, the season is a great time to take a long weekend break with the family and enjoy some festive cheer, Cumbrian style.

The clocks have been put back one hour, the trees are mostly bare having lost their golden leaves, and we have had the first frost of the season, which was surprisingly harsh for this early stage. We are pretty certain that winter has arrived here in the Lake District, and now we are just waiting for that first sprinkling of snow on Helvellyn. So, are we closed for business? Absolutely not! In fact, winter is a great time to visit this World Heritage Site, especially if you are seeking a short weekend break.
