August is a busy time in the Lake District with an influx of visitors during the peak summer months and some fantastic events planned, including 19 different agricultural shows and a fair few music festivals. Whilst we can only hope for dry weather, Cumbria often has other ideas, so be sure to come prepared for any weather even if the sun is shining at the start of the day!

August Agricultural Shows
During the summer months, the Lake District is well-known for their agricultural shows. Here farmers will showcase their livestock, local traders will sell handmade goods, there will be sheep and dog shows, various Sporting competitions, vintage tractor shows, not to mention great food and entertainment for the whole family. Each show offers something slightly different to the next. If you are visiting in the month of August, you should be able to find an agricultural show as there are 19 different shows taking place across the Lake District in August alone:

The Fell Pony Society – Breed Show
The Fell Pony Society – Breed Show is taking place on Sunday the 4th of August from 10am to 4pm. The day celebrates Cumbria’s most treasured animal – the fell pony – with a family friendly day that includes prizes and food.
Lake District Sheep Dog Trials
The Lake District Sheep Dog Trials will take place on Thursday 8th August from 10am at Hill Farm, Ings, LA8 9QQ. The trials run all day, plus there are hound trails, a dog show, craft stands, as well as bar, catering, and ice cream van. Taste of the Sea Maryport
The Taste of the Sea festival is taking place on Saturday the 10th and Sunday the 11th and will include a producers’ market, an outdoor picnic area with live music, cookery demonstrations, hot food stalls and a bar, fairground rides, and children’s activities.
Muncaster Castle: August Events
There are two events taking place at Muncaster Castle in the month of August. The first is Race the Tide, which is an obstacle tackling - running - ceilidhing - camping weekend taking place between 9-11 August. The second is Krankenhaus, which is a micro festival happening later in the month between 23-25 August, which will feature live music, performances, readings, and other events.
Festival of the Lake
Festival of the Lake celebrates Lake Windermere with a family friendly day planned to celebrate the famous Cumbrian lake! The event will take place at the Windermere Jetty Museum on the 17th of August from approximately 10am to 8pm. The festivities will include talks, stalls, and lake-themed activities.
Cumbria Classic and Motorsport Show
Dalemain will be hosting a classic car and motosport show on Sunday the 18th of August from 11am to 4pm. The show is organised by the Wigton Moto Club and the day will include entertainment, area displays, and live music.

Our Amazing Universe: An Illustrated Talk with Stuart Atkinson
Our Amazing Universe, led by amateur astronomer and author, Stuart Atkinson, will take place on Wednesday, 28th August from 2-4pm. It is an illustrated talk exploring space and the universe, showing images taken by telescopes and space probes and you will also get to see real meteorites from the Moon and Mars.
Mill Tour & Milling Demonstration
There will be a mill tour on Friday the 2nd of August from 11.30am to 1pm with a milling demonstration. Here you can learn about the 18th century mill and its fascinating history. Bags of fresh flour will available for sale following the demonstration.
Foodie Fridays
After the tour, be sure to stay for Foodie Fridays, also taking place on Friday, 2nd August, from 1pm to 3pm. This is a mini market, selling artisan bread made from flour produced at the mill. They also have homemade cakes and pies for sale.
Solfest
Solfest is Cumbria’s award winning family music and arts festival and will be taking place between the 22nd and the 25th of August. Check out the official site for the line-up of music and to purchase your tickets.
Wannasee Penrith 2024
Taking place at Hutton-in-the-Forest, Wannasee Penrith is scheduled for the bank holiday weekend between the 23rd and the 25th. The family friendly festival features live music of tribute bands that sing top hits from across the years, as well as entertainment, stalls, rides, and, food and drinks.
Kendal Torchlight: Paper Flower Making
Taking place at Abbot Hall, Kendal Torchlight: Paper Flower Making is scheduled for 1, 8, 15, 16, 22 and 29 August from 1-3pm. At this particular workshop, visitors can create their own paper flower, which will then be drawn together in celebration of the Kendal Torchlight Carnival.
