2018 has seen some amazing events taking place across the Lake District. We have sampled delicious produce at food festivals, we have seen elite cyclists race on our roads, and we have celebrated our rich agricultural heritage at numerous agricultural shows and country fairs.
This December, before we bid farewell to 2018 and all the wonderful memories that it has given us, we are once again blessed with a whole host of activities and events, many of which take on a festive theme. Craft Your Own Festive Wreath, Allan Bank, Grasmere
Allan Bank will mark the start of the festive season with a special workshop where visitors will be invited to create their own Christmas wreath. The house will be fully decorated for Christmas, creating a delightful atmosphere and during the workshop mulled wine and mince pies will be available. The session will be led by Allan Bank’s resident flower arranger and all materials including holly, berries, and cones will be provided. Booking is essential and places are limited with two sessions available.

Party Nights with the Lake District Hotels Group, Various Locations
The Lake District Hotels group own several luxury hotels across the National Park and this December they are hosting a series of party nights. The format is the same for most of the evenings, with a four-course meal followed by an evening of music and dancing. The hotels hosting the party nights are the Lodore Falls Hotel, the Inn on the Lake, the Borrowdale Hotel, and the Skiddaw Hotel, with various dates available.

Christmas at the Rheged Centre, Penrith
The Rheged Centre near Penrith has a packed calendar of events taking place this month, mostly with a festive theme. The centre’s cinema will be screening festive films such as The Grinch and The Snowman, as well as blockbusters such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.
The centre will be hosting Santa for part of the month and have created a special gingerbread house for him to stay in. Children who visit the gingerbread house will receive a gift (booking essential). In addition, children who wish to write to Santa can post their letter in the centre’s own postbox and will receive a reply.
There’s an art fair on the 8th December where you could purchase a piece of local art, perhaps as a Christmas gift. Alternatively, on the 9th December the centre is hosting an antiques fair where you may find the perfect quirky gift.
During the weekend of the 15th December, children will love the theatrical performance of Santa’s Marvellous Magical Toy Shop, a funny and heart-warming tale featuring puppetry and live music. Later in the month, there’s the option to book onto a supper with Santa, and December at Rheged finishes with a pantomime performance of Cinderella.

Christmas at Lowther Castle, Near Penrith
There are lots of fun and festive activities taking place at Lowther Castle this December. There will be wreath making workshops throughout the month, with dates to be confirmed. On Saturdays and Sundays in December before Christmas, children can visit Father Christmas in the stables where he will be waiting in his carriage to give out gifts.
If you want to add an extra special flair to your Christmas cards and labels this year then do consider booking onto the castle’s Modern Calligraphy workshops taking place on the 8th December. On the evening of the 8th December, there’s a Cinderella inspired murder mystery evening, with tickets including a three-course meal.
There’s a Christmas decoration craft workshop aimed at children taking place on the 16th December, and towards the end of the month, Science Booth will be performing a Christmas themed science show. December finishes at the castle with fabulous workshops for children in den building and mini-beast hunting.

Holker Celebrates Christmas, Holker Hall, Cark-In-Cartmel Near Grange-Over-Sands
Holker Hall will be opening its doors to the main hall during weekends in December. The hall will be beautifully decorated for Christmas and visitors can explore some of the rooms presented with all their festive finery. On the 6th December, there is a special Christmas wreath making workshop. Also on the evening of the 6th December, there is a yuletide concert with Palladium Jazz Trio. A second concert featuring pop opera group Voce will take place on the 12th December.
During the first two weekends in December, there’s an interactive performance where Mrs Santa will teach the elves to be kind, before children are invited to meet Santa and receive a gift. The activity will include song sessions and the chance to make some reindeer food. There’s a special Santa breakfast during the weekend of the 15th December. Christmas by Candlelight evening meals are available at various dates during the month.

Keswick Live Advent, Keswick Town Centre
Now in it’s fifth year, this delightful event in Keswick sees a different shop window light up each day during December with a festive display, creating a live advent calendar. With each new window that lights up there will be an activity to accompany it.
The final details are yet to be revealed but last year’s event included a santa boat race, a pop-up panto, story-telling sessions, craft workshops, and discounts in stores. You can track the advent calendar as each display is revealed on the event Facebook page listed below.

Carlisle Christmas Market, Carlisle
Returning to Carlisle’s high street once more, the Carlisle Christmas market has everything you need to make Christmas truly special. You will find a delightful array of gifts, decorations, local produce, and crafts that you can browse freely whilst being entertained with live music and street performers.
There will be around 50 traders in total, and a giant marquee in which you will be able to enjoy some hot food and mulled wine whilst being serenaded by local groups that include the Carlisle Community Choir. In addition, there will be activities for children including face painting.

Hawkshead Christmas Fair, Hawkshead
The popular Hawkshead Christmas Fair returns this December at the very start of the month, marking the beginning of a season of Christmas markets. The pretty cobbled village will host over 80 craft and gift stalls, making this the ideal opportunity to pick up a unique gift for your loved one. In addition to the market, there will be live music and street performers.
On the Saturday evening at 4pm, there will be a lantern parade through the village that everyone is welcome to join in, with prizes awarded for the best lantern. The parade will be followed by Christmas Carols in the village square. Santa will be attending with children given the chance to meet him and there will be fairground rides and other child friendly activities. Parking will be available at discounted rates.

December at Whinlatter Forest, Near Keswick
Wrap up warm and head to Whinlatter Forest this December for an exciting programme of festive events. On 1st December, there’s a chance to win a 6ft Christmas tree with an orienteering competition that covers a 3.5km course and costs £5. In the visitor centre, there’s an opportunity to join in with a free festive craft activity, with sessions being held between 11am and 3pm on the 1st, 2nd, 8th, and 9th December. These are drop in sessions with no need to book.
Also on the 1st December, there’s a special story-telling session in the Yurt, with tales from Russian folklore. Booking is essential and tickets cost £7.50 for adults and £5 for children. On the 2nd December, everyone is invited to join in with a family fun run on a 2km course, costing £3 per child (adults are free).
Finally, on the 16th December, Siskins Café will be hosting a special guest. Father Christmas will be coming for breakfast, bringing gifts for children. Booking is essential and breakfast and a gift is included in the ticket price.

Wonderfully Wild Christmas, Westmorland Shopping Centre, Kendal
Celebrate the start of the festive season this December at the Westmorland Shopping Centre in Kendal with this free, fun event for children. The centre will see the arrival of colourful characters Deer Darlington and Squirrel Nancy Nutcracker who will a run series of activities inspired by nature and Christmas. There will be games, a treasure hunt, craft sessions, and the opportunity to curl up and listen to a Christmas story.

Workington Christmas Festival, Workington Town Centre
Over in West Cumbria, the coastal town of Workington will be marking the start of the festive season with day to celebrate the switching on of the town’s lights. The town centre will host a local market selling a range of gifts, along with various forms of entertainment and activities including a large stage with live music, a fun fair, and a fabulous range of children’s activities.
There will be a Santa grotto located inside the Works shop with entry costing £2.50. One of the festival highlights will be an umbrella parade starting at the leisure centre at 4.30pm. Decorate an umbrella with tinsel and other sparkly items and join in the fun. The lights will be switched on at 5pm.

December at the Theatre by the Lake
Keswick’s Theatre by the Lake has an array of shows and events that will help you to get into the festive spirit this December. Beauty and the Beast is a thrilling adaptation of the classic fairy tale that is brought to life through music and dancing, shown throughout the month. On the 2nd of December, the annual Keswick Christmas Proms takes place in the theatre, featuring both professional musicians and a local school choir. There’s a night of Baroque music on the 9th December with La Serenissima.
Later on in the month, there are two very different shows from which to choose. Those who are perhaps a little cynical about the winter festivities may like to watch Scrooge Diaries during which Ebenezer Scrooge will reveal the truth behind Dicken’s tale, with a more dismal take on the story. Alternatively, Hey Diddle Diddle! is a delightful show aimed at children aged 3 years and up with puppetry and music that will enthral the imagination.

December at the Old Laundry Theatre, Bowness-On-Windermere
This month the Old Laundry Theatre will see some much loved characters appear on stage in Faulty Towers: The Dining Experience. Paying tribute to the classic TV show, Fawlty Towers, this immersive show takes audience participation to a new level as you will be served your meal by Basil, Sibil, and Manuel. Expect plenty of mayhem and hilarious happenings throughout.
Later in the month, there will be performances of A Christmas Carol. This adaptation of Dicken’s festive tale sees two former debt collectors once employed by Scrooge and Marley tell the tale of how they came to be unemployed. Finally, theatregoers can finish the year with sing-along film screenings of both Disney’s Frozen and the hit musical movie, The Greatest Showman.

Active Climbers of the Hills: Women in the Mountains, Dove Cottage & The Wordsworth Museum, Grasmere
This year, in celebration of the centenary of women’s suffrage, the Wordsworth Museum at Dove Cottage has been hosting a series of talks examining the role of women during Wordsworth’s time. The talk focuses on Dorothy Wordsworth and her friend Miss Barker.
Together the pair ascended Scafell Pike in 1818 and the two were amongst several women who helped to create the activity of mountaineering during the early 19th century. The talk will examine how women shaped the sport as we know it today. Advanced booking required.

Westmorland Orchestra Classical Concert, Kendal Leisure Centre, Kendal
If you are seeking to mark the start of December in a more refined style then consider a night of classical music performed by the Westmorland Orchestra. The programme includes Beethoven's Symphony No. 6 (Pastoral), Jamaican Rumba by Benjamen, A Shropshire Lad by Butterworth, and Wyethorne's Shadow by Moeran.

The Third Lake Poet: Rediscovering Robert Southey, Dove Cottage & The Wordsworth Museum, Grasmere
Think of the Lakes Poets and you will probably name William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Few individuals outside of university English literature departments have heard of Robert Southey, a third Lakes Poet, who, despite holding the prestigious role of Poet Laureate for 30 years, has largely been forgotten.

Winter Barbecuing, Hayes Garden World, Ambleside
Hosting a BBQ in Cumbria in December might seem to be an absurd undertaking but that is what is happening at Hayes Garden World in Ambleside this month. The garden centre is hosting two special events designed to show visitors that the winter months should not put anyone off attempting to cook grilled food outdoors.
On the 1st and 2nd December, the centre is hosting a Winter BBQ Market with demonstrations from chefs and BBQ manufacturers along with a range of grilled treats available to try. On the 15th and 16th December, the centre is hosting a Winter BBQ Course.
Participants will learn how to cook a full three-course meal on a BBQ and about the different techniques and equipment that can really make a difference to your culinary repertoire. Places are limited and advanced booking is required.

Navigation and Mountain Safety, George Fisher, Keswick
George Fisher staff member Paul who is a qualified mountain leader and a member of the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team will lead this half day training session that aims to enhance your navigation skills using a map and compass. The course will cover how to navigate in poor visibility, how to give your location to mountain rescue, and how to plan a suitable route, including escape routes.
Starting at the George Fisher store, you will be taken into the fells, covering around 5 miles in total. Maps and compasses will be provided. Participants must be dressed appropriately for the outdoors and bring their own snacks and drinks. The cost of the course will be donated in full to the Keswick Mountain Rescue team.

Grizedale Stages Rally, Grizedale Forest
After the complexities of last year’s 30 year anniversary race, the Grizedale Stages Rally returns this December with a more traditional and simple format. The race will start at Coniston village at 9.30am and the 80 competitors will take on 17 miles of trails around Grizedale. The cars will have a brief service stop before heading over to the moorlands of Dunnerdale (north of Broughton-In-Furness).
Later they will return for another run through Grizedale Forest and with five different car parks to choose from the forest is certainly the best place to view all the action. Spectating is free but car parking charges apply.

Christmas Party Nights, Beech Hill Hotel, Bowness-On-Windermere

Windermere Christmas Celebration, Windermere
Previously known as the Windermere Christmas market, the event is returning this month with the aim of being bigger and better. There will be a delightful range of stalls selling gifts and food, live entertainment, children’s activities, and a Santa’s grotto.
New for this year will be an elf trail, inspired by the Elf on the Shelf phenomenon. This year there will also be free parking in the South Lake District Council operated car parks on the Sunday.

As Christmas rapidly approaches it’s time to start thinking about goodies for the Christmas table. Head over to Cockermouth this December for the Taste Cumbria Christmas food festival. Once again, Main Street will host giant marquees with numerous stands inside selling a range of local produce. You will find plenty of delights that enhance your festive meals, with artisan producers of meat, fish, bread, cheeses, chocolates, and chutneys all in attendance.
There will be plenty of tipples available to try and buy inside the beer and fizz tent and a number of the stands will be selling unique gifts. Local businesses will be joining the fun offering discounts and competitions, whilst children will be entertained with fairground rides and festive themed crafts.

Christmas Pudding 10K, Sticklebarn, Great Langdale
It might be the season of feasting but those extra calories still need to be burnt off, so why not consider entering the Christmas Pudding 10K, a race organised by Brathay Challenges who raise money on behalf of the Brathay Trust. Beginning at the Sticklebarn Tavern the route will take you through the Langdale Valley down to Elterwater village and back.
Participants are encouraged to dress up in festive gear and everyone who finishes the race will be given a Christmas pudding. You can register online and Event Registration will be open from 8am until 11.30am on the morning of the event.

Ambleside Choral Society Christmas Concert, Ambleside Parish (St Marys) Church, Ambleside
Christmas isn’t really Christmas without Christmas carols, and this December in Ambleside you can enjoy an evening of choral music and Christmas carols performed by the Ambleside Choral Society.
The society is made up of around 50 amateur singers who will be performing the Christmas Oratorio by J S Bach followed by several classic Christmas carols when the audience will be invited to join in. Tickets include a glass of wine and will be available to purchase at the door.

The Enormous Turnip, Brewery Arts Centre, Kendal
Performed by the Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company, The Enormous Turnip is an adaptation of the much loved tale of Mr and Mrs Chickweed and their incredible prize winning vegetables. The couple have won numerous prizes and are set to retire, but before they do they plant one last seed to try and get just one more accolade.
