Bonfire Night in the Lake District

Bonfire Night Nov 2021

Remember, Remember the 5th of November, Gunpowder treason and plot. This year, bonfire night lands on a Friday so we think it's likely a lot of celebrations will take place on the Friday itself or on the Saturday next to it. In our article on Bonfire Night in the Lake District we explore some possible venues that may or may not be hosting bonfire night in 2021.

You will want to double check with the venues to see if and when the celebrations are taking place. Many bonfire nights at smaller venues don't necessarily have an online presence, but rather are advertised locally, so keep an eye for signs around town nearer the time or give your hotel a call to see what is taking place locally. Definitely worth joining in on the fun if you have never experienced a fireworks night before!

Carlisle Beer Festival @ the Pub

Carlisle Beer Festival Nov 2021

The Carlisle Beer Festival @ the Pub is taking place from the 29th of October to the 7th of November. Instead of a big traditional beer festival, due to government Covid restrictions, the event is taking place at various pubs throughout Carlisle. You'll be able to find cask ales not normally available in local pubs. You can find out more here.

Muncaster Castle Vigil

Muncaster Nov 2021

On Saturday the 6th of November, Muncaster Castle will be host to a ghost vigil led by a scientific research team who has been studying the "hauntings" at Muncaster Castle since 1992. You can check out the event here.

Holker Winter Markets

Holker Winter Markets Nov 2021

Artisan food, drinks and handmade gifts are just some of the things you'll find at this whimsical winter market at Holker Hall. The event will take place Friday the 5th, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th of November from 10am to 4pm each day. Tickets are £5 per person and include entry to the gardens, market, parking and entertainment with children under 16 free. Check out all the details here.

Cumbria Wildlife Trust: Conservation Days

Cumbria Wildlife Trust Nov 2021

The Cumbria Wildlife Trust puts on some fun conservation days where keen fell walkers can join the trust on a walk to help with conservation work. In November, there are two dates planned for Tuesday the 9th and also Friday the 19th. They advise you dress appropriately for a rainy November fell walk and bring a packed lunch. You can find out more about what happens here.

Thanksgiving in the Lake District

Thanksgiving Nov 2021

For our American friends visiting from the US, you may be wondering where you can celebrate Thanksgiving in the Lake District. The simple fact is that we don't celebrate Thanksgiving in England, so generally there are no traditional Thanksgiving meals being served up in Cumbrian pubs or restaurants (if you're reading this and know of one, however, please correct us by messaging us!). You will, however, find Thanksgiving dinners offered in bigger cities, such as London, but they often book up very quickly due to fact that not many places do it.

In our article on Thanksgiving in the Lake District, we do our best to provide suggestions of pubs and restaurants that would perhaps serve a good roast dinner or something hearty enough to pass off as a Thanksgiving meal. We know this isn't quite the same as having a big slice of pumpkin pie but surely being surrounded by the beautiful fells and enjoying some of the local cuisine in the Lake District will satiate your hunger. A Thanksgiving to remember!

Kendal Mountain Festival

Kendal Mountain Festival Nov 2021

The Kendal Mountain Festival takes place each November – this year it's scheduled from Thursday the 18th to Sunday the 21st of November. It is a wonderful gathering for outdoorsy folk, dedicated to sharing stories from the great outdoors from all around the globe in the form of lectures, film, literature, music, art, dance and parties. You can book your tickets online on their website.

Ulverston Dickensian Festival

Ulverston Dickensian Nov 2021

On Saturday the 27th and Sunday the 28th of November, you'll find the return of the famous Ulverston Dickensian Festival. A great opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of a traditional market town in the Dickensian era. Costumes highly encouraged. Full details will be announced on their website in good time.

Christmas Lights Switch Ons

Christmas Light Switch Ons Nov 2021

Many towns will start turning their Christmas lights on in festive fashion with early Christmas markets and gatherings come mid to late November. Depending on where you'll be, have a look at our Christmas markets page, which includes info on when Christmas light switch ons are likely to happen. These things are never announced terribly early or are too widely publicised, so you're best to keep an eye on official town council websites for the most accurate information.
