The Royal Yew (Dean)

The small village of Dean in West Cumbria is just a 20-minute drive from Loweswater, and a 30-minute drive from Buttermere. It might not seem the obvious place to find a popular restaurant, but that is what you will find at the Royal Yew, the village’s only pub.
Whilst there is a small area for drinkers, this pub is primarily focused on serving food, and it’s a formula that works. The pub is very popular with local residents who come from the nearby towns of Cockermouth and Workington to dine here. As a result, it’s best to book a table in advance, especially at weekends during the peak tourist season.
Food & Drink

The Royal Yew is a freehouse and therefore not obliged to stock beer from one particular brewery. Consequently, it offers a changing selection of real ale, usually sourced from local breweries. These ales are complemented by a selection of draught ales and ciders, various wines from around the world, and whiskies and spirits, including the Lake District’s own Lakes Distillery the One Whiskey.
The Menu
Food is served twice a day, between 12noon and 2.30pm and then again from 5.30pm until 9pm. There are a number of promotions available, including buy one get one free on lunchtime main dishes. The menu is typically of that of a gastro-pub. There are classic dishes, such as steak and ale pie, along with more internationally inspired cuisine, such as stir-fried duck.
There are daily specials and options for vegetarians. At lunch time, along with main courses, visitors can opt for lighter meals, such as baguettes. In addition, the children’s menu includes a free soft drink, with a number of options that will appeal to most fussy eaters. A traditional Sunday roast is available each Sunday.
Other Features

This is a dog friendly pub and there are no restrictions on where dogs can go. Water can be provided for your dog if necessary. The pub is spread over a large area, incorporating an old barn, and, consequently, has a number of enclosed spaces that can be hired for private functions. Catering is available and there is no charge for room hire if catering is required.
The pub holds a quiz each Tuesday evening from 8.30pm. The quiz costs £1 per person to enter and the prize is normally a bottle of wine or similar. All of the money raised from the quiz is donated to local causes.
