Lake District residents might complain about the rain (and it does rain a lot here) but there are times when the sun shines brilliantly, and on those days, there is nothing better than taking a dip in an outdoor pool.

Askham Outdoor Swimming Pool allows you to do just that with a 20-metre long heated pool, as well as a smaller paddling pool for children that is also heated. Whilst close to Penrith and Ullswater, this tiny village is relatively unknown amongst visiting tourists, but it still a delightful place to visit, with buildings dating back to the 14th century.

Highlights

Both the main pool and the paddling pool are heated, so even if the weather is a little cooler, you can still enjoy a swim. The pool is usually open from May until September, but it is best to check in advance of your visit to avoid disappointment. You will find changing facilities and showers here. In addition, there is a kiosk serving drinks and snacks, including ice cream. Around the pool there is plenty of open space for children to play and you are welcome to bring along a picnic and foldaway chairs.

A lifeguard is available but parents do need to supervise their children. Please also note that this is a community facility staffed by volunteers, so do take time to clear up after yourself when you leave. The pool is a great place to cool off after a visit to the nearby Lowther Castle where your little ones can run around a giant wooden play fort.

Getting There

From Penrith, take the A6 leading south towards Shap, and turn right onto the B5320, signposted for Pooley Bridge. Shortly after, turn left, following the sign for Askham Swimming Pool. When you arrive in the village, there is a turning on the left, clearly signposted for both the pool and the village hall. There is free parking available here.
