The Brown Cow Inn (Waberthwaite)
The Brown Cow Inn is a traditional roadside pub that is located just south of Ravenglass and Muncaster Castle on the A595. It draws much of its income from the continuous passing trade along that route, but that hasn’t meant that it has rested on its laurels, focusing on serving up delicious home cooked food that is beautifully presented, along with locally brewed real ale. This is a dog and family friendly pub that also offers overnight accommodation that is ideally placed for exploring the western Lake District.

The Brown Cow offers seven different real ales, mostly sourced from the Coniston Brewery and the Millom based Beckstones Brewery. In addition, the pub stocks a number of premium lagers and ciders available on draught, as well as a good choice of wines. There is a selection of spirits available, including those distilled locally at the Lakes Distillery, and you will find the usual choices of soft drinks, as well as tea and coffee here.
Food service times vary with the seasons so it’s best to check in advance if you are planning to dine at the Brown Cow, though generally food is available all day from noon at the weekends. The lunch time menu offers a mixture of lighter meals and sandwiches. At first glance the main menu seems to be typical pub fare, with items such as Cumberland sausage, but the food here is beautifully presented, with meat sourced from local butchers accompanied by seasonal and local produce wherever possible. There are choices for vegetarians, those on gluten free diets, and for children.
