The White Horse Inn (Scales)
Nestled at the foot of Blencathra with views of the surrounding fells, the White Horse Inn at Scales is a delightful traditional inn with a good reputation for its food. The C2C cycle route passes the pub and it’s therefore a popular choice for cyclists attempting this challenge. The pub offers bunkhouse accommodation that is ideal for cyclists and groups of walkers.
Inside, you will find warm fires, flagstone floors, and exposed beams all contributing to a cosy atmosphere. Food is served twice a day and the pub offers a changing selection of real ales.
Food & Drink
The White Horse Inn has three hand pulls for real ale and offers a changing selection of locally brewed cask beers. In addition, there is a small selection of draught and bottled beers, as well as a limited choice of wines. You will also find the usual choice of spirits and soft drinks available here.
This pub has a good reputation for its food. Food is served twice a day on Mondays to Thursdays from noon until 2pm and then again from 6pm until 9pm. On Fridays and at the weekend, food is available all day between noon and 9pm. A lunch time menu offers a selection of filled sandwiches and ciabattas, as well as jacket potatoes. The main menu features all of the pub classics, such as steak & ale pie, fish & chips, and Cumberland sausage & mash. Many of the ingredients are locally sourced.
The pub offers a wide choice of dishes for vegetarians that include a tempting Champagne & mushroom risotto. There are daily specials that offer more adventurous choices. Children are well served here with typical favourites, such as fish fingers, as well as home made dishes like lasagne.
Other Features
The pub has a beer garden with lovely views of the surrounding fells. From the beer garden, there are paths that lead directly to the summit of Blencathra. The pub welcomes dogs throughout, including in the accommodation. There is a quiz held on a Wednesday evening at 9pm, but during the quieter months, it may not run if numbers are low.
