The Sally @ Threlkeld
Dating back to 1664, the Sally Inn (formerly known as the Salutation Inn) is a traditional Lake District coaching inn that is particularly popular with locals. The pub is situated in the village of Threlkeld, near Keswick and at the foot of Blencathra. It’s ideally located for rewarding yourself with a pint or two after an ascent of Blencathra, and with overnight accommodation available this pub makes a great base for exploring the northern fells.
The pub was refurbished a few years ago, but it’s brimming with period charm, with cosy fires and exposed beams. It is the sister pub of the Horse & Farrier that can be found up the road, and whilst the Horse & Farrier is a gastro-pub, the Sally is more focused on providing a social space, with a sports TV and pub games.
Food & Drink

The Sally’s welcoming bar is the first choice for many local residents seeking a night out, and it offers a wide selection of drinks to help encourage a jovial atmosphere. No rural Lake District pub is complete without a good choice of well-kept real ales, and the Sally has them in abundance, with a varied choice from regional breweries that include Robinsons, as well as guest ales sourced from lesser known producers.
If you prefer draught beer then you are spoilt for choice at the Sally, with Fosters, Guinness, John Smiths, and Kronenbourg 1664 all available, as well as Strongbow Cider. The wine list is fairly respectable for a rural pub, offering twelve different brands held behind the bar, with something to suit most tastes. In addition, you will find all the usual spirits and soft drinks here, as well as tea and coffee.
The Menu
Although the pub is open every day, food is not available on Mondays and Tuesdays. Food is served Wednesday & Thursdays from noon until 2pm and then again from 5pm until 9pm. From Fridays to Sundays, food is available all day from noon until 9pm. Lighter options are available at lunchtime (or until 5pm at the weekend) with a good selection of sandwiches and jacket potatoes.
The main menu is fairly limited, but all the usual pub favourites are featured, including scampi and burgers. There are a couple of more adventurous options, including a wild boar burger, along with daily specials and vegetarian options. A traditional Sunday roast is served all day on Sundays and is fairly popular with locals. A children’s menu offers much loved dishes, such as hot dogs and fish fingers.
Other Features

The Sally is somewhat of a sports bar. The pub has a subscription to Sky Sports and screens major sporting events, including football, golf, and rugby, on a widescreen television located in the bar. The pub also has a traditional darts board and a pool table. The pub has a pleasant beer garden to the rear with benches on a gravelled area. The Sally is dog friendly throughout.
