Deep in the heart of the Grizedale Forest that stretches between Lake Windermere and Coniston Water, the Eagles Head is the only pub for several miles. Thankfully, it’s brimming with old world charm and has one of the largest selections of locally brewed ale in the area.

Extending a warm welcome to dogs, children, and muddy boots, this pretty pub features roaring log fires, exposed beams, and classic country pub décor. The pub is located in the small village of Satterthwaite, just a mile and a half from the Grizedale Forest visitor centre. It is an ideal place to enjoy a pint after experiencing a forest adventure.

The Eagles Head’s owners have made a conscious decision to only serve beers that have been produced within a 20-mile radius of the pub. Whilst in other areas this might be very limiting, thankfully, Cumbria has an abundance of breweries and the pub’s suppliers include the Coniston Brewing Company, Ulverston Brewing Company, Cumbrian Legendary Ales, Barngates Brewery, Hawkshead Brewery, and the Tarn Hows Brewery.

Many of the ales produced by these breweries have won awards and the pub has a regularly changing selection of hand pumped ales from these suppliers, as well as a permanent choice of bottled beers. There is a choice of twelve wines, with nine available by the glass, ensuring that there is something to suit all tastes and budgets. In keeping with the local theme, coffee is supplied by Farrers of Kendal.

The Menu

During the week, lunch is available on Thursdays and Fridays between noon and 2.30pm, whilst evening meals are served between 5pm and 10pm. At weekends, food is served throughout the day from noon. During lunchtime, there is a good selection of hot filled ciabattas available, as well as a small selection of pub classic main dishes. In the evenings, the menu is fairly limited and the choices are typical pub fare, but all are beautifully cooked.

The Eagles Head is very well known for its selection of pies – all handmade and served with potatoes and vegetables. Along with the usual steak and ale, diners can opt for something a bit different, such as the Wild Game & Juniper pie. There is a limited children’s menu and a limited choice for vegetarians. On Sundays, the pub’s Sunday roast dinner is particularly popular with a choice of meats on offer.
