The Red Lion Inn (Lowick Bridge)
The Red Lion Inn is nestled in a picturesque valley south of Coniston Water, away from the beaten tourist track. It’s an independently owned pub with a charming and cosy atmosphere, with traditional Lake District pub décor.
The pub is popular with local residents, but it also offers accommodation and is a great base for discovering the hidden charms of the southern end of the Lake District, including the tranquil Duddon Valley. Food is available here, along with real ale, and the pub welcomes dogs. The pub was frequently visited by Arthur Ransome, author of Swallows and Amazons.
Food & Drink
The Red Lion Inn has three hand pulls for real ale, and it offers two real ales from the Bank Top Brewery in Bolton, as well as a third guest ale, often sourced from local breweries. There’s a good choice of draught beers, lagers, and ciders, including favourites Carling and Guinness, and the house wine list includes a respectable selection to suit most tastes. The bar also stocks a variety of spirits, whiskies, and liqueurs, and for non-alcoholic drinkers there are a number of soft drinks and juices available, as well as tea and coffee.
Food is available in the evenings only during weekdays, and twice a day (lunch time and evenings) during weekends. Sandwiches and jacket potatoes are available at lunch time, whilst the main menu features typical pub grub. All the classic dishes are available here, including battered haddock and chips, Cumberland sausage, and lasagne. The pub offers daily specials for additional choice, and there is a children’s menu.
Other Features
Outside, there is a small patio with picnic benches and views of the surrounding countryside. Every second Thursday of the month the pub hosts an acoustic jam night when anyone who can play an instrument can join in and make music. Dogs are welcome in the bar and in the overnight accommodation.
Accommodation
The Red Lion has just three guestrooms available, so you won’t feel crowded when staying here. There are two double rooms and one twin room that can also be booked as a single. Rooms are simply furnished in a classic style and offer good value for money. All rooms feature en-suite bathrooms, televisions, and tea and coffee making facilities. Free Wi-Fi is also available throughout.
