Located in the heart of Ulverston, the Sun Inn is an ancient coaching inn that has recently benefited from a full refurbishment that created cosy and tasteful surroundings. The inn offers gastro-pub style dining combined with a fabulous selection of real ales.

This lively pub is popular with local residents who come for the live sports and to visit the pub’s basement nightclub. Rooms are available here and there is a good sized beer garden to the rear.

Food & Drink

The Sun Inn (Ulverston) pub

The Sun Inn opens every morning at 10am so if you want to grab a mid-morning coffee without the fussiness of a coffee shop then this is the place to go. The well-stocked bar has six hand pumps for real ales and offers a changing selection that is sourced from a number of local breweries, including Stringers Beer that is based in Ulverston.

There is a good choice of draught beers and ciders, as well as a fine selection of wines available by the glass. In addition, the pub has a carefully curated gin and tonic menu with an impressive number of choices, as well as all the usual spirits, whiskies, liqueurs, and soft drinks.

The Menu

On weekdays, food is served between noon and 3pm and then again from 5.30pm until 9pm, whilst at weekends food is served from noon until 9pm (8pm on Sundays). Seasonal and locally sourced produce is used wherever possible and the menu is extensive. There is a good choice of lighter bites with sandwiches and ciabattas available at lunch time. The dining experience here is a little above standard pub grub with the menu featuring modern British favourites, such as slow roasted belly pork.

The pub classics, such as haddock and chips, feature heavily on the menu, but there are also some more unusual dishes, such as Chinese inspired crispy beef. Burger fans will be pleased with the “build your own burger” menu with a fantastic range of options to choose from. It’s worth noting that many dishes are served on what the pub describes as “creative tableware”, such as pieces of slate, but you can request a plate if that is preferred. A full roast dinner is served each Sunday with a choice of meats.

The Sun Inn is dog friendly in the bar. Dogs are not permitted in the more formal dining room. The Sun Inn boasts of multiple TV screens throughout the establishment, plus a giant screen in the bar. It shows all the major live sports events, including Premier League football.

To the rear of the pub, there is a fairly substantial beer garden that has in the past won awards for its floral displays. In the pub’s basement, there is a nightclub where various DJs play sets at weekends and club goers can dance the night away.

Accommodation

The Sun Inn (Ulverston) accommodation

The Sun Inn has several rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis, offering a mixture of double and twin accommodation. As with the rest of the pub, these rooms have been refurbished in recent years and provide comfortable accommodation with en-suite facilities and amenities that include televisions, free Wi-Fi, and tea and coffee making facilities.

The room rates are exceptionally low for accommodation close to the national park, but that is due to the noise that comes from the nightclub and guests should take note of this. Ear plugs are provided for all guests but some disruption is inevitable.
