The Lion and the Lamb (Gosforth)
Never judge a book by its cover, and in this case, never judge a pub by its exterior. The Lion and the Lamb in Gosforth, West Cumbria, might appear from the outside to be a traditional Lake District pub, but it was fully refurbished in 2016 and inside you will find a modern, lively sports bar that is very popular with local residents.
This pub features a huge screen with Sky Sports, a pool table, and hosts regular live music events. The pub is owned by the Mawson family who also own the nearby Kellbank and a large farm in the area.
Food & Drink
The Lion and the Lamb serves up a selection of locally brewed real ales, including Jennings Bitter and Loweswater Gold. As you might expect from a sports bar, the pub has a wide range of premium beers and lagers, including San Miguel and Carlsberg. There is a small choice of house wines and all the usual spirits are available here, along with tea and coffee and a selection of soft drinks.
Food is generally served twice a week Monday to Thursday and all day from noon on Fridays and Saturdays, but it’s best to check in advance as these times can vary. Guests can choose to either dine in, or order a takeaway, with local delivery available for a fee. The menu is typical bar food, with fish and chips, burgers, and sausages available, along with pizzas and kebabs. There are daily specials that occasionally offer a more gastro-pub style experience, often with a seafood focus. Children have a small number of dishes to choose from and there are meal deals available.
Other Features
The pub has been refurbished to create a modern sports bar. At one end, there is a giant projector screen and the pub has a subscription to Sky Sports, enabling it to screen all the major sporting events. In the centre of the bar, there is a pool table and the pub regularly hosts pool tournaments and local leagues. The pub also has a table football and a darts board. Dogs are welcome here. Outside, there are a small number of tables at the front of the pub.
Accommodation
The Lion and the Lamb has a selection of single, small double, and standard double rooms available for fairly reasonable rates. All rooms have been refurbished to a good standard and benefit from en-suite facilities. All rooms feature flat screen televisions with some Sky Sports and Sky Movies channels, as well as free Wi-Fi and tea and coffee making facilities. Room service is available and a full cooked and continental breakfast is included in the room rate, using produce from the owner’s farm.
