The Eltermere Inn

Elterwater, Ambleside, LA22 9HY
The Eltermere Inn Outside

Located on the edge of Elterwater village, and just ten-minutes from Ambleside by car, the Eltermere Inn is perhaps more of a country house than an inn. Nevertheless, it welcomes walkers (boots must be removed) with well behaved dogs. This is very much a “grown-ups only” pub. Although children are not barred from the inn, there is no children’s menu.

Perfect then, for those seeking a quieter, more sophisticated dining experience. There are a number of popular walking routes in the area, including Loughrigg fell and the Cumbria Way along Elterwater.

Food & Drink

Eltermere Inn

The Eltermere Inn has a small, but extremely well-stocked bar with slate floors, rich red walls, and quirky art. Real ale is available here, with three hand pumps stocked with a changing selection supplied by Cumbrian breweries, including Jennings. The wine list is extensive with some interesting choices that have been sourced from across the world, but do be prepared to dig deep in your wallet for a glass or a bottle. The inn’s collection of spirits is particularly impressive, and you shouldn’t leave without trying some of the their homemade damson gin.

The Eltermere Inn has been featured in the Michelin guide thanks to its use of fresh ingredients that have been beautifully prepared to create a delicious meal. Between Tuesdays and Saturdays, lunch is served between 12 noon and 3.30pm, afternoon tea is available between 2pm and 5pm, whilst evening meals are available between 6.30pm and 9pm. On Sundays, food is served between noon and 3.30pm. It’s worth noting that food is not served on Mondays, other than on bank holidays.

The menu is impressive. Classic favourites are superbly prepared with contemporary twists. Burgers are served with gruyere cheese in a ciabatta bun, the Cumbrian Ploughman’s uses the best of Cumbria’s chutneys and cheeses, whilst more imaginative dishes, such as paprika and saffron marinated corn-fed chicken breast, will awake your taste buds. The Sunday lunch is particularly delightful, and there are limited options available for vegetarians.

Other Features

The inn has three-acres of gardens leading down to the shore of Elterwater. The sloped grounds have been landscaped to create connected spaces where you will find tables and chairs that offer delightful views. Additionally, the inn welcomes dogs in the bar and in a set selection of rooms.
