Wainwrights Inn (Chapel Stile)

Oozing with old world charm, Wainwrights’ Inn in Chapel Stile is part of the Langdale Estate and is nestled within the beautiful Great Langdale valley, overlooked by the surrounding fells. The pub lies on the Cumbria way, so is popular with walkers whose muddy boots and four-legged friends are most welcome.
Inside this former farmhouse, you will find cosy rooms with low ceiling beams, real log fires, and slate flooring, as well as an excellent selection of real ales. Parking is very limited here, so it’s worth considering parking in Elterwater and taking a short pleasant stroll along the Cumbria Way to the inn, which will take you around 10-15 minutes.

If you love real ale, then you will love Wainwrights’ Inn, because here they have it in abundance. With no ties to a particular brewery the inn is able to offer a selection of real ales from the local area. The inn’s regular ales are sourced from Barngates Brewery, Bowness Bay Brewing, Hawkshead Brewery, Jennings, and Cumbrian Legendary Ales amongst others. The inn also serves a regularly changing selection of guest ales, ensuring that pub regulars almost always have something new to try.
If you can’t decide which ale to choose, opt for a beer bat / paddle, with three third pint glasses with three different ales. There are plenty of wines to choose from, including a good number available by the glass, and there is an impressive gin menu. You will also find all the usual choices of spirits, whiskies, and soft drinks here.
The Menu
The pub is part of the Langdale Estate, which is home to the Smokehouse, where the estate’s head chef prepares a delicious array of smoked meats and cheeses, many of which feature on the menu of Wainwrights’. Food is available throughout the day from noon. The all day menu has a good mixture of sandwiches, baguettes, salads, burgers, and main meals, with most dishes using locally sourced produce wherever possible.
All of the pub favourites are here, but you will also find a good selection of bistro style fare. There is an imaginative children’s menu that offers much more than the usual chicken nuggets, etc., and there are plenty of options for vegetarians.
