Whilst the Talbot Bar is part of the Skelwith Bridge Hotel, it is very much a traditional Lake District pub, with an open fire, exposed brickwork and beams, and brass ornaments adorning the walls. The pub and hotel are located in Skelwith Bridge – a pretty hamlet that attracts hundreds of walkers thanks to the nearby falls, lakes, tarns, and low level walks. The pub is particularly popular with dog owners, with a special menu for four legged diners.

Food & Drink

As you might expect from a traditional Lake District pub, the Talbot Bar serves a good selection of locally brewed real ale. Regular cask ales include Jennings favourites Bitter and Cumberland, along with the Talbot Tipple, an English Pale Ale that is made especially for the pub by the Jennings Brewery.

In addition, the pub has a changing selection of guest ales, usually sourced from Cumbrian breweries. There are a couple of lagers and ciders on draught, and for non beer drinkers, there is a reasonable wine list, as well as a wide choice of spirits, including local gins, whiskies, rums, and vodkas.

The Menu

Food is served every day from noon throughout most of the day until 9pm with the exception of the hour between 4pm and 5pm. As the pub is in a walking hotspot reservations are recommended, even during the quieter seasons. The menu is typical for an English pub, containing all of the usual favourites, such as steak & ale pie and fish & chips, with the pie being particularly highly rated.

However, there are a few more imaginative dishes, including a Cajun chicken burger and Caribbean green curry. If you prefer something lighter, then before 4pm the menu offers a small selection of hot and cold baguettes. The children’s menu has just four choices, but it covers all the basics, with fishfingers, sausages, Bolognaise and vegetable curry.

Other Features

The Talbot Bar is very dog friendly. Dogs are allowed throughout and if your dog is hungry he or she can order from the doggy menu, with a choice of chicken, sausage, or a snack bag. Water bowls can also be provided and the main hotel reception has a supply of dog waste bags if required. There is a medium sized pool table housed in a separate lounge, costing 50p per play with complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, as well as a spacious beer garden with plenty of tables, surrounded by rich countryside.
