The Kings Arms (Hawkshead)
Located in the centre of Hawkshead, the Kings Arms is a cosy, and characterful inn that has been welcoming travellers to the cobbled-street town since the reign of Elizabeth I. The inn combines a hotel and self-catered accommodation with a small, but well-stocked bar that serves locally brewed ale, and a dining room that is a firm favourite of both locals and visitors alike.
Live music events are a regular occurrence here, and there is an annual mini beer festival. Inside, you will find a traditional style interior with a real fire, exposed beams, and a unique bar post carved into the shape of a king. The inn is just a couple of minutes walking distance from the Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead.

The bar here is small, but very well stocked. There are two regular real ales, including Hawkshead Bitter and Cumbrian Legendary Ales Loweswater Gold. There are also two changing beers, usually sourced locally. There is a good selection of wine, including guest wines, and staff are knowledgeable and able to make recommendations. In addition, there is an extensive selection of single malt whiskies, as well as the usual gins, vodkas and other spirits. You will also find hot drinks and non-alcoholic options.
Food is served twice a day between noon and 2.30pm and then again between 6pm and 9.30pm. Reservations are possible in the dining room. The lunch menu has a good mixture of sandwiches, wraps, and main courses. The lunch time sharing platters are particularly popular, offering a tapas style lunch. In the evenings, there is a bistro style menu offering a mixture of pub classics along with more modern and imaginative dishes. Children’s menus are available, and there are choices for vegetarians.
Other Features
The inn hosts regular live music events, around two to three times a month, showcasing local acts. Each summer, the Kings Arms hosts its own mini beer festival with live music, a great selection of craft ales, and BBQ food.
The Kings Arms has a small selection of board games, such as Scrabble and cards, in the bar for patrons to use. Additionally, there is a small patio to the front of the pub with tables and chairs from where guests can watch the comings and goings of the village and dogs are welcome in the bar area, but not the dining room.
Accommodation
The Kings Arms has nine rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis, all presented in a simple, modern style. Single, twin, double, and family (one double and one single bed) rooms are available, all with en-suite shower room facilities that include complimentary toiletries. Additional in-room amenities include digital televisions, hair dryers, tea and coffee making facilities, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
Breakfast is included in the room rate. Overnight guests can be provided with packed lunches if required. The inn has three self catered cottages that can be let for three nights or more. The cottages sleep between 4 and 6 people and are located in the vicinity of the pub.
