The Pig & Whistle (Cartmel)

The Pig & Whistle (Cartmel) Outside

Up until 2015, the Pig & Whistle was best known as chef Simon Rogan’s (of L’Enclume) foray in being a pub landlord. It attracted a good number of visitors keen to try the chef’s cuisine without the Michelin starred prices of his nearby signature restaurant. The pub has now returned to previous license holders and local couple, Emma and Tim, but it still remains a gastro favourite with good, seasonal, bistro style food.

The inn is located in a quiet corner of Cartmel, away from the priory and the central shops and pubs, appealing to those who prefer to be away from the crowds. Inside, you will find a warm welcome with cask ales, and outside, there is a delightful beer garden perfect for watching the sun set.

The Michelin starred chef may have left, but the inn still serves exquisite food that is beautifully presented. The main menu is not extensive, but there is something to suit all tastes and the restricted number of options ensures that the kitchen is able to do each dish very well. The menu changes with the seasons and features internationally inspired cuisine, such as curried lamb with savoury custard.

A tapas menu is available for those who prefer something lighter, and on Fridays, to Sundays, there is a lunchtime menu in operation with a good selection of sandwiches. For children, there is a choice of four dishes that are children’s favourites or the pub can provide smaller portions of their mains if preferred.

The Pig & Whistle is owned by the Robinson’s Brewery and serves four cask ales supplied by the brewery, including their popular Cumbria Way – a golden ale that is full-bodied with hints of citrus. There is a good wine list that changes regularly, with something to suit most tastes and many available to buy by the glass. You will also find a good choice of ciders, draught beers, spirits, and soft drinks here.
