The Dog & Gun is a small pub in the village of Skelton on the eastern edge of the Lake District, close to Penrith. After a short period of closure the pub was reopened in 2017 following a complete refurbishment and the new owners have quickly established the Dog & Gun as one of the best places to eat in the area. Owner and chef, Ben Queen-Fryer, was a finalist in the Roux Scholarship and since he and his wife took over the pub has received a Michelin Bib Gourmand award, as well as several other award nominations.

This small pub now boasts of modern and sophisticated interiors with quirky features, such as the presence of a large harp in one corner. It is an excellent choice for those seeking an upmarket alternative to traditional pub grub. It’s worth noting that this pub is closed Mondays to Wednesdays, opening evenings only Thursdays to Saturdays, and all day on Sundays.

The Dog & Gun serves real ale with a changing selection of locally brewed beers, including that created at the nearby Hesket Newmarket brewery. There is a carefully curated choice of wines, with guest wines often available, as well as the full range of spirits and soft drinks.

The food is what draws most people to the Dog & Gun, and all of it is prepared from scratch in the kitchen by the chef. This is not your average pub grub, and the menu changes on an almost daily basis. Diners can expect to see a range of imaginative and mouth-watering dishes on the menu, such as venison suet pudding or braised beef bourguignon, alongside more traditional favourites like roast chicken or roast lamb hot pot. Desserts are equally tempting and exciting, such as a devilishly good dark chocolate tart. On Sundays, the chef turns his attention to more traditional fare with a classic roast dinner available with all the trimmings. The pub also has a children’s menu that offers something to suit most young tastes.

Other Features

Dogs are welcome in some sections of the pub where there are tables available for dining. The pub also has a small selection of board games.
