The Board & Elbow has three hand pulls for cask ale and serves a changing selection, sourced from breweries across the UK. There is a good choice of draught beers, including Carling, Stella, and Fosters. There are eight wines to choose from, available either by the glass or by the bottle, including a Rosé and a Prosecco. The pub has an impressive list of gins, including a number of liqueurs from the increasingly popular Edinburgh Gin range.
The Menu
Food is served all day from 11.30am. The menu is extensive. There are brunch style items, such as Cumberland sausages in a bread roll and eggs on toast. There are various lighter options, including sharing dishes such as nachos, along with jacket potatoes and baguettes, both with a range of fillings. For something more substantial, the menu offers a range of pub classics, including steak pie, hunter’s chicken, and fish & chips.
There is a choice of grilled cuts and burgers, and there is a small selection of dishes for vegetarians. Daily specials include a curry of the day, whilst a traditional roast dinner is served each Sunday. Children have a number of options with a drink and a small tub of ice cream included in the price.

The pub has a range of additional features for added entertainment. There is a pool table, darts board, juke box, and three plasma television screens that show Sky Sports. On the last Friday of the month, there is usually a live music evening featuring local acts and during the summer months karaoke evenings are a regular occurrence. On Wednesday evenings, there is a pub quiz with cash prizes.
This pub welcomes dogs. There is no beer garden as such but during the warmer months there are occasionally tables placed at the front of the pub on the pavement.
History
The Board & Elbow was once two separate buildings that have now been joined together. One side was once known as the Black Bull and an inscription on the building’s lintels bears the date 1624, implying that it dates back to around that time. The pub is located on the corner where Cornmarket meets Great Dockray. Cornmarket was once home to several inns, including this pub, and was so named because the inns used to sell grain and provide stables for the horses of farmers who drove their cattle through the town.
The other side of the building was known in the seventeenth century as the Gambling Corner House since a tailor by the name of Gambling had a shop there. At the turn of the twentieth century the shop was purchased by Glassons Penrith Breweries, providing a town centre outlet for the company. The brewery ceased manufacturing in 1960 and the building was converted into a pub.
