The Sportsmans Inn (Troutbeck) Outside

Near the small village of Troutbeck that can be found west of Penrith (not to be confused with Troutbeck near Windermere), the Sportsmans Inn is a typical English pub that serves food and locally brewed real ale.

The pub is just off the A66 and relies heavily on passing trade, as well as that from a nearby holiday village, but it also has a good number of regular locals who come to watch the football match or play a game of pool. With an elevated position, the pub’s beer garden has some pretty spectacular views of the fells.

This is a Jennings pub so naturally you will find Jennings real ale here, brewed around 25 miles away in Cockermouth. There are usually five ales to choose from with the occasional guest ale. The large bar has a good selection of draught and bottled beers and ciders, as well as a choice of wines and spirits. Teas and coffees are also available.

The Menu

Food is served twice a day on Mondays to Fridays and all day from noon at the weekend. The pub is a popular eatery with patrons choosing to return multiple times. It’s typical pub grub but it’s hearty and wholesome, and you certainly won’t leave feeling hungry.

The main menu has all the usual pub favourites, such as steak and ale pie or scampi, but if you want something a little different then check out the large specials board that has a wide range of dishes with something to suit most tastes. There are weekly specials, such as Curry Night and Pie Night, plus a traditional roast dinner is available every Sunday. The pub has a children’s menu and there are choices for vegetarians.

The Sportsmans has a 55 inch HD TV and it screens the free-to-air events, such as the football World Cup and the rugby Six Nations. The pub has a large pool table and a darts board. There are occasional darts tournaments. At the rear of the pub, there is a terraced beer garden, as well as further tables in the gravelled area between the terrace and the pub’s car park. From here, there are beautiful views of the surrounding fells.
