The Sun Inn (Pooley Bridge)
Brimming with heritage and charm, the Sun Inn in Pooley Bridge is a large gastro-pub that is very popular with tourists visiting the pretty lakeside village. Inside this family run and dog friendly pub, you will find delightfully rustic interiors with cosy fires, wooden panelled walls, and exposed beams.
Many of the period features originate from the row of 18th century cottages that were converted to create the pub. Outside, there is an extensive beer garden with views of the countryside and a play area. This pub serves food throughout the day and locally brewed real ale.
Food & Drink
The Sun Inn is a Jennings Brewery pub, with four hand pulls for cask ales, three of which are used for Jennings’ ales, including the ever-popular Cumberland Ale. The fourth is used for a guest ale, which changes regularly. There is a fairly decent wine list with wines sourced around the world, and the bar stocks several local gins along with a varied choice of single malt whiskies. The bar serves barista style coffee, as well as a choice of teas and deluxe hot chocolate.
Food is served all day at the Sun Inn from noon. Between noon and 5pm, there is a choice of sandwiches, paninis, and jacket potatoes with gluten free bread available if required. The main menu offers a wide choice of dishes, including salads, grilled items like steak and venison, and pub favourites, such as steak and Jennings ale pie, scampi, and Cumberland sausage. Vegetarian options are somewhat limited, whilst children have a choice of dishes that feature favourites like spaghetti or fishfingers. On Sundays, a traditional roast dinner is available with a choice of meats.
Other Features
The Sun Inn hosts a quiz on Wednesday evenings, starting at 8.30pm and costing just 50p per person to enter. The pub is dog friendly with a separate bar that welcomes dogs and walkers with muddy boots. Sausages for dogs can be provided if required, for an additional charge. The pub benefits from a large grassed beer garden with a good number of picnic benches and a play structure that resembles a castle.
Accommodation
The Sun Inn has eight ensuite bedrooms that are presented in classic and comfortable style, with a choice of single, double, and twin accommodation. Complimentary luxury toiletries are provided, and all rooms have tea and coffee making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and a television. Several of the rooms can accommodate dogs. The rooms here are spacious and the pub is a popular base for those attempting to walk the Ullswater Way. Breakfast is included in the room rate.
