Highland Drove Inn

Good food, a roaring open fire, and real ale; exactly what is needed after a long day cycling along the Coast to Coast cycle route. Weary bike enthusiasts and other travellers will find just that at the Highland Drove Inn, in the village of Great Salkeld. The tiny village lies north of Penrith, close to the ancient monument of Long Meg and Her Daughters, and is one of the recommended stopping points for those attempting the 135 mile long cycle route between Whitehaven and Sunderland.
As the name implies, this ancient inn was once a popular resting place for Scottish drovers who brought their Kyloes, a breed of long haired cattle, down from the highlands and into England to be sold at markets.
Food & Drink
The pub has a large bar where you can sample local ales and enjoy food, all whilst sitting under timber beams next to an open fire. The bar is a popular establishment with locals, especially as it has a large beer garden, a pool table, and is incredibly dog friendly.
The restaurant menu changes monthly as all of the food is locally sourced and the menus are designed to match the local produce on offer seaonsally. The pub also puts on a Sunday roast with all the traditional fixings. Residents of the inn will be treated to a hearty Cumbrian breakfast each morning that is cooked to order.
Other Features
The pub features a spectacular beer garden with beautiful views of the countryside. Indoors, there is a pool table, along with a warming fireplace. The pub also puts on events from time to time, including live music, karaoke, pub quizzes, and more. Please keep an eye out for any upcoming events.
Accommodation
The accommodation includes three rooms with one of those rooms being dog friendly. There is a king room with a mountain view, a standard king room, and a double room with a garden view. All of the rooms have recently been redesigned after the new owners took over in 2022. The rooms all have private bathrooms with bath tubs, air conditioning, tea and coffee making facilities, and hairdryers.
