Pubs with Pool Tables in the Lake District
Pool, pocket billiards, snooker - whatever your fancy - there are plenty of places in the Lake District to get in some cue practice. Many of the pubs with pool tables also offer other games, such as darts and family board games, or may have mounted sports screens to watch the game.
As always, it’s best to call or message ahead of your visit to ensure the pool table is still there and available for use. These pubs can be extremely popular with locals, so it’s quite possible you’ll have to queue for a game if you’re visiting at a peak time. Ask nicely if you can have the table after someone else’s game, pop your coins on the table to reserve your slot and wait your turn with a refreshing pint and some good old banter with the locals.
The Woolpack Inn (Eskdale)
Located in the quiet valley of Eskdale, the Woolpack Inn aims to offer something for everyone. Here you will find a separate games room equipped with a good sized purple pool table. During busy periods, the pool table is very popular with teenagers camping in the local campsite, so there may be a queue. The games room also has a darts board.
The Talbot Bar at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel
The Talbot Bar has recently had a new addition, with the arrival of a new pool table that is housed in a separate lounge room. It costs just 50p for a game and the table is surrounded by comfortable armchairs. The bar serves a great selection of real ale to accompany your game, whilst food is served here twice a day.
The Sun Inn (Newton Reigny)
The Sun Inn in Newton Reigny is a family friendly pub. Inside you will find a medium sized pool table that is popular with the younger visitors to the pub. The pool table is accompanied by a darts board and dominoes games and located in the large, lively, bar area where there is also a television with Sky Sports.
The Sun Inn (Bassenthwaite)
The Sun Inn in the village of Bassenthwaite has a small separate games room where you will find a pool table as well as a darts board, allowing patrons to play without being disturbed by the pub guests. Pool and darts teams play here so access is not guaranteed. The pub serves local real ale and excellent food.
The Sun (Coniston)
The Sun, Coniston, was Donald Campbell’s base when he made his last attempt at the water speed record. His memory is honoured in the “boat room”, a games room packed with Campbell memorabilia. Here you will find a small pool table, along with a darts board and television. There is plenty of space in the room for drinking in between shots.
The Strickland Arms (Penrith)
The Strickland Arms is a family friendly pub and for those seeking to play a game or two of pool there is a medium sized pool table that is housed in a separate room located just off the bar. The pub can be popular in the summer months so you may have to wait for a game. Real ale is available here.
The Stan Laurel Inn (Ulverston)
The Stan Laurel Inn is a fantastic pub for pool fans. This traditional inn has a large, separate games room where the pool table is located in the centre. Pool costs 50p per play. The pool table is accompanied by a darts board and a selection of board games. There are also tables in the room for those wishing to dine and play.
The Snooty Fox (Uldale)
At the Snooty Fox in Uldale, near Bassenthwaite, patrons can enjoy a game of pool in peace, thanks to a separate pool room. There is a small charge for a game. There are benches around the pool table so you can enjoy a drink in between turns. The pub serves real ale and food is available during the evenings.
The Ship Inn & Quayside Sports Bar (Bowness-On-Windermere)
The Wheelhouse Centre is home to both the Ship Inn and the Quayside Sports Bar that is located on the ground floor. Here you will find a large pool table in one corner with a small charge to play a game. The sports bar has other pub games available and its own bar so you don’t have to return upstairs for drinks.
The Sally @ Threlkeld
The Sally Inn at Threlkeld near Keswick is somewhat of a sports pub, with football on the TV and pub games, including a pool table in the bar. Pool costs 50p per play and the table is conveniently placed close to a TV. This pub is very popular with locals who come to play on the pool table and on the darts board.
The Royal (Penrith)
The Royal Pub is a local favourite on the edge of Penrith town centre. It has a large pool table in one corner of the pub and it is here that a local pool team practices and competes. The pool table is adjacent to one of the pub’s television screens so you can watch the football match whilst you play.
The Royal Oak Inn (Bowness-On-Windermere)
The Royal Oak in Bowness-On-Windermere is a traditional style pub that benefits from a separate games room housing a pool table. A deposit can be paid at the bar for access to the pool cues. Along with the pool table the games room is also home to a darts board, a games machine, and a television showing Freeview channels.
The Old Farmhouse (Ulverston)
The Old Farmhouse benefits from a games room that houses a large pool table. Pool costs 50p per play and the table is overlooked by a giant television screen so you can watch the football in between turns. The pool table is accompanied by a darts board and a selection of board games. The pub serves food throughout the day.
The New Cock & Bull (Cockermouth)
At The New Cock & Bull in Cockermouth you will find a welcoming and traditional style inn with an emphasis on real ale. Spread over three floors, the pub has a pool table in one of the upper rooms. Being one of just a handful of pubs with this facility, it is very popular with locals and therefore you may have to queue.
The Mill Inn (Mungrisdale)
The Mill Inn is a traditional 17th century inn located in the tiny village of Mungrisdale, between Keswick and Penrith. The pub has a small pool table that can be found in one end of the pub. A small charge is required to play a game, and the pool table is accompanied with a darts board and a games machine.
The Manor Arms (Broughton-In-Furness)
The Manor Arms at Broughton-In-Furness has a medium sized pool table located in its own room. There is a small charge to play pool and it’s very popular with local residents. The pub also has its own pool team. This traditional pub also offers a variety of board games to play, and it stocks a wide choice of real ale.
The Kingfisher Inn (Cockermouth)
The Kingfisher Inn in Cockermouth is a friendly pub on the outskirts of the shopping centre. There is a pool table here that is located in the games area of the pub. Along with the pool table you will also find a darts board and a giant Connect 4 game. The pub is very popular, especially at weekends, so you may have to queue.
The Heron (Kendal)
The Heron is a large family friendly pub that is popular with local residents in Kendal. The pub is popular with families with older children thanks in part to its pool table that inhabits one corner of the pub. The medium sized pool table is complemented with a darts board and games machine, and it is free to use every Thursday.
The Herdwick Inn (Penruddock)
The Herdwick Inn in Penruddock is a large country inn that welcomes families. The inn boasts of a medium sized pool table that is tucked away in a snug room so it does not intrude on diners and those in the bar. Along with the pool table the snug room has a darts board and a games machine, plus comfortable seating.
The Greys Inn (Windermere)
The Greys Inn ins Windermere is very popular with local residents thanks in part to its pool table that is free to play. The pool table is housed in a separate side room where you will also find darts and a television screen showing the latest sporting action. The pub serves food all day and real ale is available here.
The Globe (Ulverston)
The Globe is a small pub in the centre of Ulverston that is popular with local residents. The pub has one main room with a bar, and a small side room that houses the pub’s pool table. There is a small charge to play pool. The pub also benefits from a darts board, as well as a large beer garden.
The George & Dragon (Kendal)
The George & Dragon has recently been taken over by new managers who have undertaken a refurbishment of the pub, and this has included the pool table that now features a new baize and bumpers. The pool table is free to use on Tuesday evenings and there is a television above the table, allowing you to watch the match whilst you play.
The Castle Inn (Kendal)
The Castle Inn in Kendal is very much a traditional pub, with traditional pub games, including a pool table. The medium sized pool table is located in a snug corner of the pub. The pub also has a darts board and a games machine.
The Brown Cow Inn (Waberthwaite)
The Brown Cow at Waberthwaite, south of Ravenglass, has a small pool table that is located in one corner of the bar. There is a small charge to play a game and the pool table is accompanied by a darts board and a games machine to help keep you entertained in between games. The pub has a good selection of real ale.
The Sportsmans Inn (Troutbeck)
The Sportsmans Inn is a large pub near to Penrith. The pub benefits from a good sized pool table that sits in a side room. There is a small charge to play. The pool table is adjacent to a television so pool players can watch the match in between turns. The pub also has a darts board and board games.
The Royal Oak (Spark Bridge)
The Royal Oak is popular with families with older children, thanks in part to the separate games room that features a pool table. This means that guests can play pool without disturbing other diners and patrons. There is a small charge to play. The pub also has a collection of board games and food is served here.
The Queen’s Head (Tirril)
The Queen’s Head in Tirril near Penrith welcomes families and younger visitors in particular will be pleased to discover the pub’s pool table. It is tucked away in a quiet back room so you may have to hunt for it. There is a 50p charge per play. The pub serves Robinsons Brewery real ale and delicious home cooked food.
The Punchbowl Inn (Askham)
The Punchbowl Inn is a family friendly pub in the village of Askham. It has a small snug area that has a small pool table along with a selection of games, and this part of the bar is particularly popular with families with children. You therefore may have to queue to use the pool table, with real ale available while you wait.
The Old Crown (Hesket Newmarket)
The Old Crown at Hesket Newmarket is a place where the local community can get together to enjoy a pint of locally brewed ale. It has a games room that houses a pool table, and there is a small charge to play. The pool table is very popular with the younger local residents so be prepared to wait a while for a game.
The Lutwidge Arms (Holmrook)
For the benefit of bar patrons and hotel guests, the Lutwidge Arms has a pool table located in the bar. It’s housed in the back room to ensure that play does not intrude on other patrons enjoying drinks and meals, and the pool table is also accompanied by a darts board. The bar is only open in the evenings and food is available.
The Lion and the Lamb (Gosforth)
The Lion and the Lamb in Gosforth in the western Lake District has been converted from a traditional style pub into a modern sports bar. There is a pool table at the centre of the bar and the pub hosts local pool leagues and competitions on a regular basis. The pub also benefits from a table football and a darts board.

The Last Orders at The Clock Tower is a popular sports bar in the centre of Kendal. The pub is home to a large pool table in a spacious area of the pub away from the tables and chairs. There is a television above the pool table so you can watch the match whilst you play. The pub also has a darts board.
Lake Road Inn, Keswick
The Lake Road Inn in Keswick is a popular pub with tourists and hidden away across a courtyard at the back of the pub there is a converted barn housing the sports room. Here you will find a large pool table that can be used without disturbing diners in the main bar. The room also has a projector screen showing live sports.
King George IV Inn (Eskdale)
The King George IV has a small pool table that is located in a separate games room, along with a darts board and board games. The pool table tends to be popular with teenagers who are camping with their families in the area and costs 50p per game. During peak periods you may need to queue to use the table.
The Horse & Rainbow (Kendal)
The Horse & Rainbow is a lively sports bar in the centre of Kendal, serving a wide selection of drinks. The inn has a large pool table that costs 50p per game. On Mondays, the pool table is free to use all day long. There is a television above the pool table enabling patrons to watch live sports whilst they play pool.
Fletcher Christian Tavern (Cockermouth)
The Fletcher Christian Tavern in Cockermouth is a sports bar in the centre of the town. There is a large games area in the pub with a pool table. You will also find a games machine and a darts board here. Occasionally the pub offers the chance to play pool for free throughout the evening, and there is a good choice of drinks available.
The Derby Arms (Witherslack)
Step inside the Derby Arms and you would probably assume that this isn’t the sort of establishment that has a pool table. However, walk through the country estate style rooms and you will find a snug and cosy games room complete with a pool table that tends to attract the younger crowd. Additional games such as darts and board games are also available.
Cuckoo Brow Inn (Far Sawrey)
The Cuckoo Brow is more of a gastro-inn than a casual watering hole, so whilst there is a pool table here, it’s more of an antique feature rather than a place to hone your aim. The pool table is located in the second bar area housed in the converted stables, where you’ll find family games and cosy seating.
Cross Keys Inn Carleton Village (Penrith)
The Cross Keys Inn on the edge of Penrith is a family friendly inn that serves food twice a day. There is a pool table located in a separate room on the lower level where you will also find the main bar. A pool team meets here regularly to complete and practice, so you may need to wait for a game.
The Clickham Inn (Penrith)
The Clickham Inn is a small, rural, but friendly inn located amongst the farm pastures between Penrith and the Lake District. Along with the bar and restaurant area the pub has a separate games room where you will find a full size pool table. The pool table is free to play, and the space is also shared with a darts board.
The Brotherswater Inn (Patterdale)
The Brotherswater Inn is part of a larger complex where you will find a campsite with various facilities. Within the campsite there is an additional bar, known as the Barn End bar, where you will find a pool table. This bar is only open at weekends during the summer, and it tends to be dominated by campers.
The Board & Elbow
The Board & Elbow is a popular and lively pub in the centre of Penrith, serving food all day. The pub has a pool table in one corner. There’s a small charge to play but on Thursday evenings the table is free to use from 6pm. The table is accompanied by a darts board and the pub also screens Sky Sports.
The Beehive Inn (Eamont Bridge)
The Beehive Inn in Eamont Bridge near Penrith is a great place to play pool. The pool table sits in a large alcove near the bar so there is plenty of space away from the tables. When you have finished your game of pool you can hop onto the adjacent table football game or play a game of darts.
Anglers Arms (Haverthwaite)
The Anglers Arms in Haverthwaite is a popular and lively pub thanks to its facilities that include a pool table. The pool table is located in a separate section away from diners. It is used by local pool teams for competitions so may not always be available for public use, but it is free to play on Wednesday evenings.
The Punch Bowl (Barrows Green)
The Punch Bowl in Barrows Green, Kendal, has a good sized pool table that is located in the main bar room, meaning that there are no issues with regards to disturbing guests who are dining.
