Pubs with Live Sport in the Lake District
Whether it’s the rugby Six Nations, the Grand National horse race, the FIFA World Cup or the English Premier League football, there are plenty of pubs in the Lake District that offer sports screens for all of you sports fans out there looking to catch a game during your visit to the Lake District.
Here we’ve come up with a list of all the Lake District pubs we’re aware of that offer sports screens on a more regular basis. Of course many other pubs may add a TV for a big sporting event, but these ones are probably your best bet in terms of more regular sports action. As always, please call ahead to ensure they will be showing whatever it is you fancy watching to avoid disappointment.
The Mardale Inn
The Mardale Inn shows the occasional bigger rugby or football match, such as when England plays in the Six Nations, for example. Games being shown in the pub will be listed in advance on the pub's official website.
Wainwrights Inn (Chapel Stile)
Wainwrights’ has a large flat screen television in the main bar area. Major sporting events are shown here, such as the rugby six nations, and the inn has a subscription to Sky sports enabling it to screen major football matches. The bar area has plenty of seating so you can enjoy a pint or a meal whilst you watch.
Tweedies Bar & Lodge (Grasmere)
Tweedies is a popular bar in the village of Grasmere. There’s a television in the bar and it is one of only two venues in the area with a Sky Sports subscription. As a result, the bar can get very crowded during major sporting events, so it’s best to get there early in order to guarantee getting a table.
The Woolpack Inn (Eskdale)
The Woolpack Inn is an ideal place to watch sporting events. In the café part of the pub, there is a 100 inch HD TV. The inn has a subscription to Sky Sports and is therefore able to screen all of the major sporting events, including football, rugby, and tennis, with staff usually happy to oblige if you have a request for a specific event.
The White Lion Inn (Patterdale)
The White Lion Inn at Patterdale has a television in the bar and a subscription to Sky Sports. It screens major sports events such as football matches, making it a popular venue for both locals and visitors who are keen to catch up on the latest sporting action. The pub serves real ale and food is available throughout the day.
The Swan Inn (Cockermouth)
The Swan Inn in Cockermouth is known for providing a friendly space for local groups to get together, and this also applies to sports fans. With a large television in the back bar and subscriptions to Sky Sports and BT Sports, the pub is able to offer live screenings of most of the major football matches and other sporting events.
The Sun Inn (Ulverston)
The Sun Inn is a refurbished former coaching inn that benefits from a number of screens throughout the building, including a large screen in the bar. Visitors to the pub can catch up on all the latest sporting action, with all major events screened here, such as Premier League football, the Grand National, and the Rugby Six Nations.
The Sun Inn (Newton Reigny)
The Sun Inn in Newton Reigny has two television screens located in the large bar and it has a subscription to Sky Sports. Whilst it mostly screens football matches it does occasionally show other major sporting events such as the Rugby Six Nations and the Grand National. The pub serves food and a range of beers including real ale.
The Sun Inn (Crook)
The Crook Inn has a large flat screen television in the bar area and screens major sporting events such as the World Cup and the Euro Championship. The pub often offers meal deals with the matches that include a main and a drink, and there are plenty of tables and chairs around the television. This is a popular pub, so you may wish to book your table in advance.
The Sun (Coniston)
The Sun has a television in a separate room to the main bar where you will also find a pool table, darts board, and Donald Campbell memorabilia. Major sporting matches are regularly shown here, and because its separate from the bar, it means patrons can enjoy the match in peace and diners in the bar are not disrupted.
The Ship Inn & Quayside Sports Bar (Bowness-On-Windermere)
Arguably the best place to catch up on all the major sporting events, The Ship Inn and downstairs Quayside Bar both have subscriptions to Sky Sports, BT Sports, and ESPN. The Quayside Bar has an 8ft drop down screen allowing you to watch your favourite sport in full detail, or you can watch on a smaller screen in The Ship whilst you eat.
The Sally @ Threlkeld
There aren’t many places at the foot of Blencathra where you can watch major sporting events, which is why The Sally in Threlkeld is particularly popular with locals. The widescreen TV in the bar shows events screened by Sky Sports, including football, boxing, rugby, and more. With real ale available behind the bar, this is a great place to watch the match.
The Royal (Penrith)
The Royal in Penrith is one of the best places for sports enthusiasts to catch up on all of the latest sporting action. The three rooms all have flat screen televisions and the pub has a subscription to both Sky Sports and BT Sports, ensuring all of the major events can be screened here. The pub serves real ale and traditional pub grub.
The Royal Oak Inn (Bowness-On-Windermere)
The Royal Oak at Bowness-On-Windermere does not have a subscription to Sky Sports or BT Sports, but it does have a television in the games room with Freeview channels and the pub screens major free to air sporting events such as the football World Cup and the rugby Six Nations. The pub serves real ale and food is available all day from noon.
The Red Lion (Hawkshead)
The Red Lion in Hawkshead has two large flat screen televisions and a subscription to sports channels. It’s worth noting that one screen is surrounded by Liverpool FC memorabilia, which may be disheartening to fans of their opponents! Most of the major matches are shown, and the pub becomes bedecked with England flags during national tournaments, in support of the home team.
The Old Farmhouse (Ulverston)
The Old Farmhouse boasts of three large flat screen televisions in the bar and games room. The pub has a subscription to both Sky Sports and ESPN, and it screens all the major sporting events including football , rugby, horseracing, and boxing. For those wishing to avoid the sports crowds, the pub does have a separate quieter restaurant.
The New Union (Kendal)
The New Union is a friendly and lively pub on the outskirts of Kendal’s town centre. It has one large flat screen television in the bar area but does not have a sports channels subscription service. It screens free to air events such as the FIFA World Cup, a selection of the Formula One races, and the Rugby Union Six Nations tournament.
The New Cock & Bull (Cockermouth)
The New Cock & Bull is a charming pub that is spread over three levels with a number of smaller, cosy rooms. In the main bar area and in one of the smaller rooms you will find televisions and the pub is licensed for Sky Sports. All the main fixtures are shown here, along with other national sporting events.
The King’s Head (Thirlmere)
The King’s Head at Thirlmere as a small, discrete flat screen television in an elevated position opposite the bar area. It is used on occasions to screen major sporting events, but this tends to be a quiet affair as the pub’s prime focus is on providing a restaurant service. Ideal then, for those who prefer to watch in peace.p>
The Kellbank
The Kellbank at Gosforth is a popular pub, thanks in part to its ability to screen Sky Sports. In the modern, refurbished bar there are three televisions allowing you to watch the action from most tables, as well as an additional television in a small side room off the bar. Food is available here, along with locally brewed real ale.
The Heron (Kendal)
The Heron in Kendal is a large family friendly pub. There are two television screens and the pub has a subscription to Sky Sports and BT Sport. The pub screens a range of major events from various sports, including football, rugby, cricket, and boxing. During televised premier league games the pub has a loyalty card where you can get a sixth pint free.
The Greys Inn (Windermere)
The Greys Inn in Windermere has large flat screen televisions at various points in the bar area and it has subscriptions to both Sky Sports and BT Sports. As a result it is able to screen all the major sporting action. For significant events such as England matches the pub regularly offers discounts on certain drinks to help patrons celebrate or commiserate.
The Good Sport (Grasmere)
There are not many places in Grasmere where you can catch up on the local sporting action, which is why Grasmere’s newest pub, The Good Sport, is a welcome addition to the village. The pub has a large flat screen television in the bar and a subscription to Sky Sports. It screens major football matches, as well as golf, formula one, and more.
The Golden Lion, Keswick
The Golden Lion in Keswick is a lively pub in the town centre. Inside you will find a number of large flat screen televisions positioned around the bar and dining areas. The pub has a subscription to Sky Sports and is therefore able to screen major events including Premier League Football matches. Requests can be made to staff for screenings providing there isn’t a clash.
The Globe Inn (Kendal)
The Globe Inn in Kendal has a large flat screen television in the bar area, however it only airs freeview channels. The television is usually tuned to the news, but during major sporting events such as the football world cup, the inn shows the free to air matches and often provides complimentary snacks for patrons during half time.
The George & Dragon (Kendal)
The George & Dragon is a town centre pub that has a difficult period of trading in recent history but is now under new management. Reverting back to a more traditional style of pub, the George & Dragon now offers a range of ales and other drinks within a quiet atmosphere, with a pool table, sports television, and regular live folk music nights.
The Engine Inn (Cark-In-Cartmel)
The Engine Inn has a large television in the bar area and a subscription to Sky Sports. Major sporting events are regularly screened here from a range of sports including football, cricket, and rugby. With Cartmel Racecourse just two miles away, the pub is popular with racing enthusiasts, and therefore it also screens the Racing UK channel.
The Crown Inn, Coniston
The Crown Inn in Coniston has one large flat screen television in the main bar area. The pub screens a number of major sporting events, including various football matches, Rugby Six Nations, and the Grand National. There are plenty of tables in view of the television and there is a separate dining room to ensure guests can eat in peace if preferred.
The Castle Bar (Cockermouth)
The ground floor of the Castle Bar, Cockermouth, is where you will find the more informal bar area with a number of rooms. The bar has a subscription to Sky Sports and two televisions and therefore is able to screen more than one event at a time. It screens major events from a number of different disciplines, including football, rugby, and Formula One.
The Bush (Cockermouth)
The Bush Inn has a large flat screen television in the bar area with a subscription to Sky Sports. Football matches shown on Sky are screened here throughout the season, and the pub also screens other national sporting events such as the Rugby Six Nations. The pub does not serve food all day, but often serves chips during the half time of matches.
The Brookside Inn (Windermere)
The Brookside Inn in Windermere is one of the few pubs in the area to have a subscription to both Sky Sports and BT Sports. The pub is popular with local residents seeking somewhere to catch up on all the latest sporting action viewable on the large television in the bar. The bar stocks real ale and food is served twice a day.
The Bridge Inn (Santon Bridge)
The Bridge Inn has a cosy lounge by the bar with a television and a subscription to Sky Sports and BT Sports, so you can watch the top events in comfort. In addition, in the function room there is a large screen and projector where matches are also occasionally screened. Food is available all day, should you require a snack during the match.
The Swinside Inn (Keswick)
Following a full refurbishment in 2017, the Swinside Inn in Newlands Valley, near Keswick, has relocated the bar to the modern annex of the building. In this bar there is a television with a subscription to Sky Sports, and most of the major fixtures are shown. However, the volume is kept low in order to remain discreet and avoid disturbing other patrons.
The Sportsmans Inn (Troutbeck)
The Sportsmans Inn near Penrith has a large HD television in the bar. There’s no subscription to sports TV packages but the pub does screen the free to air events such as the football world cup and rugby Six Nations. Occasionally there will be special offers on drinks during these matches and the pub is popular with local residents seeking to watch these events.
The Royal Oak Inn (Cartmel)
The Royal Oak Inn in the small village of Cartmel is the place to be if you are looking to watch live sports fixtures during your visit to the area. The bar has a large flat screen television with Sky Sports channels and is therefore able to screen most major events. The bar serves a great selection of real ales and bar snacks.
Royal Oak (Braithwaite)
It’s unusual for country style inns to have live sports, but the Royal Oak in Braithwaite near Keswick does have a small television screen in the bar for this purpose. However, it’s only used for important sporting events and therefore not on all of the time. The sound is often turned down in order to avoid disturbing the other patrons.
Romneys (Kendal)
Romneys has a large screen in the bar. It screens free to air channels which means that major international tournaments such as the World Cup can be screened here. The pub is popular with families and is primarily focused on dining, making this a quiet establishment to watch TV rather than one with a noisy crowd and plenty of banter.
The Pooley Bridge Inn
The Pooley Bridge Inn regularly screens live sports events on the television in the bar, including football and boxing. During the summer months fans can also watch the action in the beer garden where there is a television and outdoor bar. Occasionally the pub has ticketed events that includes an event screening and food and these tend to be popular.
The Pig & Whistle (Cartmel)
The Pig & Whistle has a television in the bar area with a subscription to BT Sports and Freeview. All Premier League and Championship football matches hosted by BT Sports are shown at the pub, along with other sporting events such as the Rugby Six Nations. If any guests have a request for something to watch this will be accommodated if possible.
Outgate Inn
The Outgate Inn that is located between Ambleside and Hawkshead has a small television in the bar area. It shows free to air sporting events such as the Rugby Six Nations and the FA Cup. The inn is a friendly and welcoming place, so you can be sure to find some friendly banter during the matches, and real ale is available here.
Old Friends (Ulverston)
The Old Friends pub in Ulverston is a traditional, no frills pub serving real ale. It’s very popular with local residents thanks in part to the subscriptions it has to Sky Sports and BT Sports. There are two televisions, one in the main bar and one in the back room, so it’s able to screen two events at a time.
The Oddfellows Arms, Keswick
The Oddfellows Arms in Keswick is a popular pub amongst local residents and visitors, thanks to its low prices. This pub has a flat screen television in the downstairs bar area. There is no subscription to Sky or BT Sports, but the pub does show free to air events, such as the FIFA World Cup, the Rugby Six Nations, and the Olympics.
The Lion and the Lamb (Gosforth)
If you can’t make the match in person then you can experience the next best thing at the Lion and the Lamb in Gosforth, where matches are projected onto a giant screen in the bar. The pub has a Sky Sports subscription and tends to attract a lively crowd during major events. Food is available here, either to eat in, or takeaway.
Last Orders at the Clock Tower
If you are looking for a place to watch the latest sporting action in Kendal, then head over to the Last Orders at The Clock Tower. This sports pub has seven large television screens around the bar, and shows the top events screened by both Sky and BT Sports. The pub serves a wide selection of alcoholic drinks with regular promotions.
Lake Road Inn, Keswick
The Lake Road Inn in Keswick does not have a subscription to Sky Sports, but it does screen all of the major free to air events such as the FIFA World Cup, the FA Cup, and the Rugby Six Nations. These events are screened on a large projector screen that is housed in a small converted barn separate from the pub.
The Kings Arms (Cartmel)
The Kings Arms in Cartmel has a large flat screen television in the bar area and is licensed to show Sky Sports, BT Sports, and Freeview channels. The pub serves real ale and regularly shows premier league matches, and if patrons have a particular televised fixture or event they wish to watch the pub will try and accommodate this if possible.
King George IV Inn (Eskdale)
There is a widescreen television in the bar area of the King George IV Inn in Eskdale. The inn screens major sporting events such as the football World Cup and European Championships, the Rugby Six Nations and other national events. The pub often has discounts on beer during certain events, and food can be eaten in the bar area.
The Horse & Rainbow (Kendal)
The Horse & Rainbow is a popular sports bar in the centre of Kendal. It’s a fabulous choice for watching all the latest sporting action, with three large flat screen televisions around the bar. The pub has a subscription to Sky Sports and BT Sports and screens all the major sporting events, including Premier League football and boxing matches.
Fletcher Christian Tavern (Cockermouth)
The Fletcher Christian Tavern is Cockermouth’s primary sports bar. This large bar is home to nine television screens and licensed to screen Sky Sports and BT Sports. Therefore, there are no issues to scheduling clashes, as multiple events can be screened at the same time. Consequently, the bar is able to host special events for larger competitions, such as the Cheltenham Races.
The Clickham Inn (Penrith)
Despite being a small, rural pub, the Clickham Inn near Penrith has subscriptions to both Sky Sports and BT Sports. There is a television in the bar and the pub screens major football matches and other sporting events. Occasionally there are special rates available on certain dishes and drinks during match screenings, as well as sweepstakes for some matches.
The Board & Elbow
The Board & Elbow is a town centre pub in Penrith that is home to three large plasma television screens. The pub has a subscription to Sky Sports and is therefore able to screen a range of sporting events such as football and cricket. This lively pub serves food throughout the day and has a good range of beers available.
The Beehive Inn (Eamont Bridge)
The Beehive Inn in Eamont Bridge, south of Penrith, has a large flat screen television close to the bar. The pub has subscriptions for both BT Sports and Sky Sports and screens all the major events. The pub’s Facebook page is normally updated with the sports schedule so you can check if your match is being shown.
