Pubs with Rooms in the Lake District
Quite a few pubs in the Lake District offer accommodation for the night, along with a hearty breakfast the following morning. And, after a long hike in the fells, what’s better than returning back to ‘home-base’ for a refreshing pint? Whilst pub accommodation generally has a reputation for being fairly basic - and there are plenty in the Lake District that offer just that - there are also a fair few that go above and beyond expectations with beautifully presented rooms and luxurious amenities.

The Wilsons Arms (Coniston)
The Wilsons Arms has a range of high quality accommodation available. There are seven en-suite rooms at the inn that are beautifully presented with modern furnishings. There are four holiday cottages / apartments ranging from one to three bedrooms available on a self-catered basis, all furnished to a high standard. The White Horse Inn (Scales)
If you are a group seeking accommodation that is comfortable, but basic, then check out The White Horse Inn at Scales, by Blencathra. The Wheatsheaf Inn (Brigsteer)
The Wheatsheaf Inn at Brigsteer has six rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis. The rooms have been completely renovated in recent years and include all standard amenities. The Watermill Inn & Brewery (Ings)

Tweedies Bar & Lodge (Grasmere)

The Troutbeck Inn

The Tower Bank Arms in Near Sawrey has just four en-suite rooms, and these book up well in advance. The White Hart Inn (Bouth)
The White Hart Inn in Bouth has five bedrooms that visitors can stay in. Four are double rooms with en-suite bathrooms and the fifth room is a family room with a private, but separate bathroom. The Wheatsheaf Inn (Lorton)
The Wheatsheaf Inn offers a range of self-catered accommodation only. Above the inn there is a three bedroom apartment available to let which includes a fully equipped kitchen. To the back of the pub there is a campsite offering a mixture of grass and hardstanding pitches, along with a number of static caravans that can be hired for short term breaks.
The Wasdale Head Inn
The Wasdale Head Inn has a mixture of accommodation. There is B&B style accommodation within the inn itself, self catered apartments sleeping between two and four people on the site, and a basic campsite with a toilet and shower block. The guestrooms are comfortable but basic, with a full cooked breakfast included. Campers can also purchase bacon butties in the morning.
The Wakefield Arms, Kendal
The Wakefield Arms in Kendal is attached to the Kendal Premier Inn. Like all other hotels in this chain, the hotel offers basic but comfortable accommodation for affordable prices. The Talbot Bar at the Skelwith Bridge Hotel
The Talbot Bar is part of the Skelwith Bridge Hotel, located in the very heart of the Lake District. The Strickland Arms (Penrith)
The Strickland Arms near Penrith lies on the C2C cycle route and specialises in accommodation for cyclists. The Station Inn (Oxenholme)

Just a short drive from Cockermouth and around 30 minutes’ drive from Keswick, the Ship at Dovenby offers comfortable accommodation for a reasonable price. The Strands Inn (Nether Wasdale)
If you want somewhere basic that offers some of the best walking opportunities in the Lake District then head to the Strands Inn in Nether Wasdale. The en-suite rooms are simply furnished, but there is nothing simple about the stunning scenery offered by Wastwater and the Wasdale Valley and with real ale brewed on the premises it really is a walker’s paradise.
The Screes Inn (Nether Wasdale)
The Screes Inn has eight rooms that have recently been refurbished. Rooms are booked through its sister pub, The Strands Inn, with breakfast served in The Strands. Rooms are comfortable but basic, with the location making this an ideal place for keen walkers who are simply seeking a place to rest their head at night. Many rooms have fell views.
The Sally @ Threlkeld
Location, location, location: The Sally at Threlkeld can certainly boast of that. Situated at the foot of Blencathra this inn is a great base for walkers wishing to explore the northern fells. The B&B accommodation here is basic but comfortable, and a full cooked breakfast will certainly fuel your ascent to the summits. A self-catered two bedroom is also available.
The Royal Oak (Keswick)
The Royal Oak in Keswick is a fabulous place for those seeking town centre accommodation that welcomes walkers. The Pig & Whistle is a very small pub, and therefore does not offer rooms. It can accommodate six people in two bedrooms and a sofabed in the lounge. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is private parking and a terrace.
Outgate Inn
The Outgate Inn has just three rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis, so it never feels crowded. There are two doubles and one twin room, all with en-suite facilities. Rooms are simply furnished and equipped with all the basics, including WiFi. The inn’s prime location between Hawkshead and Ambleside means it offers great value for money.
Old Kings Head (Broughton-In-Furness)
The small town of Broughton-In-Furness in the southern Lake District is a fabulous base for exploring the idyllic Duddon Valley, Coniston Water, and Lake Windermere. The Old Kings Head is a recently refurbished pub that offers comfortable accommodation in the town, with all modern amenities and en-suite facilities. Old Dungeon Ghyll (Great Langdale)
The Old Dungeon Ghyll is a country inn that harks back to a bygone era. There are 12 guestrooms here, but only half are en-suite, with the rest having their own allocated private bathroom. Middle Ruddings Country Inn
Middle Ruddings Country Inn is home to 14 en-suite rooms with a good range of amenities. The Lutwidge Arms (Holmrook)
The Lutwidge Arms is a fantastic base for those wishing to avoid the crowds and explore some of the quieter areas of the Lake District. It has 15 rooms, all with en-suite facilities, and offers a mixture of single, double, and family accommodation. Many rooms have delightful views of the fells. Dogs and children under 5 cannot be accommodated here.
The Lion and the Lamb (Gosforth)
The Lion and the Lamb in Gosforth offers pub accommodation with hotel services. The rooms have been refurbished in recent years and benefit from modern amenities including satellite TV channels. Room service is available here and breakfast is included in the room rate. The pub is close to the coast to coast cycle route, making it an ideal stopping point.
The Kirkstile Inn (Loweswater)
The Kirkstile Inn is a fabulous place to escape from the stresses of modern life. There are 11 rooms here offering a mixture of double and family accommodation. Double rooms have no televisions, whilst WiFi and mobile signal is weak. The family accommodation includes separate rooms for children. Rooms have en-suite bathrooms and a cooked breakfast is included in the rate.
King George IV Inn (Eskdale)
The King George IV Inn in Eskdale has just two B&B style rooms available, simply furnished with standard amenities. The inn also has three self-catered properties on the premises, all with private entrances, sleeping between 4 and 8 people in total. Two are apartments attached to the property, whilst one is a modern static caravan on the site.
The Horse & Farrier (Threlkeld)
Recently refurbished throughout, the Horse & Farrier in Threlkeld combines the warmth of a pub welcome with the comfort of fresh, modern rooms. All rooms have en-suite bath or shower rooms and there are two suites that benefit from their own lounge areas with sofabeds. Guests can enjoy a full cooked breakfast and there is a drying room for wet walking gear.
The Hare & Hounds (Levens)
The Hare & Hounds offers five lovely letting rooms, each with their own character and are named after former landlords of the pub. All of the rooms are ensuite and include a fabulous breakfast each morning between 8.30-10am. If you are looking for self catering, the site offers the Barn Annexe, which has its own parking space, a lounge and a kitchen. This is currently the only space that allows furry friends, as well.
The Hare & Hounds (Bowland Bridge)
The Hare & Hounds in Bowland Bridge has a small number of rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis. Rooms are individually styled with plush, soft fabrics and delightful furnishings. All rooms are en-suite, with some benefiting from the addition of free standing roll top baths in addition to showers. A cooked breakfast is included with the rate.
The George & Dragon (Clifton)
The George & Dragon near Penrith has eleven guestrooms that are beautifully presented with furnishings and artwork owned by the Lowther family. There are single and double rooms available, as well as rooms with sofabeds for family accommodation. Rooms have en-suite bathrooms and televisions with DVD players. A champagne breakfast is served each morning for a small supplement.
The Eltermere Inn
The Eltermere Inn is a former country manor house and is home to 12 elegant and cosy rooms, many of which have luxurious extras, such as free-standing roll top baths. Most rooms offer delightful views of the fells and lake, and all are fitted with all of the standard amenities. Guests of the inn receive free passes to a local spa.

An ideal base for those wishing to explore the southern Lake District with easy access to Newby Bridge for Windermere and Sizergh Castle near Kendal, the Derby Arms at Witherslack offers stylish accommodation within a charming and friendly pub. Rooms are packed with period charm and include modern amenities. A continental breakfast is available each morning, and packed lunches can be provided.
Cuckoo Brow Inn (Far Sawrey)
With beautifully refurbished rooms that feature luxurious extras such as roll top baths, the Cuckoo Brow in Far Sawrey is a delightful place to escape to for a short Lake District break. Double and family rooms are available, with all modern amenities and breakfast included. Packed lunches are available on request for guests, and dogs can stay for a small charge.
The Crown Inn (Pooley Bridge)
If you like the idea of pub accommodation, but don’t want to scrimp on those luxurious touches, then check out The Crown Inn at Pooley Bridge. Fully refurbished in 2017 this inn offers 17 luxury bedrooms with special extra touches such as fresh milk and biscuits. The inn is just a short walk from Ullswater and it serves food throughout the day.
Coledale Inn (Braithwaite)
The Coledale Inn in Braithwaite is the perfect accommodation for fell walkers, being located at the very start of some spectacular walks including the magnificent multi-peak Coledale Horseshoe. The inn’s refurbished and dog friendly rooms have all of the standard amenities and drying facilities and a packed lunch service is available. Good food and real ale is served in the bar.
The Church House Inn (Torver)
The Church House Inn at Torver is a short distance from Coniston Water and an ideal base for exploring the south-western fells. The inn has six rooms available, four are doubles and two rooms sleep six with a double bed and four bunkbeds in each. A full cooked breakfast is included in the room rate. Motorhome or caravan pitches are also available here.
The Cavendish Arms (Cartmel)
The Cavendish Arms has ten rooms available, each one elegantly presented with neutral tones that highlight the period features of the building. Rooms are adequately appointed with en-suite bathrooms, toiletries, WiFi, and televisions. Some rooms have sloped ceilings and three are located above the adjacent shop. A full breakfast is included and the inn is a two minute walk from Cartmel racecourse.
The Castlegate Arms (Penrith)
The Castlegate Arms in Penrith offers budget accommodation in a newly refurbished building. The small but modern rooms offer televisions, bathrooms, and tea and coffee making facilities. Breakfast is not served at the hotel but there are several options in nearby cafés. The pub is conveniently located in Penrith town centre with parking available, and Ullswater is within a short drive.
The Brotherswater Inn (Patterdale)
Ideal for walking holidays, the Brotherswater Inn has a small number of en-suite rooms above the inn, with a mixture of double and twin accommodation. Many of the cosy rooms have fabulous views of the fells and all are equipped with standard amenities. Breakfast is included. The inn also has a campsite with various pitches for tents, caravans, and motorhomes available.

The Brook House Inn in Eskdale has eight en-suite rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis. Six rooms are doubles, whilst two offer family accommodation with one or two additional beds. The rooms are fitted with all of the standard amenities, though it’s worth noting that the WiFi can be unreliable thanks to the rural location. Breakfast is included in the room rate.
