The Fox & Hounds (Ennerdale) Outside

Tucked away in a quiet and remote corner of the Lake District, the Fox & Hounds is a delightful inn, currently owned by the local community who purchased it in 2011 and undertook a full refurbishment. Located in Ennerdale Bridge, the pub is around 30 minutes by foot from the shore of Ennerdale water and the start of the wild Ennerdale valley. Inside, this traditional Lakeland inn features flagstone floors, real fires, and exposed beams all contributing to a cosy and friendly atmosphere.

Outside, there is a delightful beer garden accessed via a small footbridge over a stream that runs alongside the pub, and a small number of tents can be pitched here for a small fee. The pub is not far from the coast to coast walking route and happily welcomes walkers, dogs, and families with children.

Food & Drink

The Fox & Hounds has five hand pumps for real ale and offers up a changing selection that is usually sourced from local breweries, including Jennings in Cockermouth, the Ennerdale brewery, and the Black Sheep brewery that is located across the county border in Yorkshire.

The pub also stocks a good choice of premium lagers, beers, and ciders. The wine list is limited with just the basics covered, and there is a small selection of gins to choose from, including Bedrock gin that is distilled just outside of Keswick.

The Menu

Food is served daily between noon and 9pm, though during the winter months it’s best to check in advance of your visit. The food here is typical pub grub. It’s not fancy but it will fill you up and fuel you up the fells, with lighter options, such as sandwiches also available.

The menu features all the pub favourites, including Cumberland sausage and mash, burgers, and gammon steak, whilst daily specials offer up some alternatives. There is a good range of choices for vegetarians and vegans, and there is a children’s menu with a number of dishes that will no doubt be a hit.

Other Features

Dogs are welcome throughout the pub. There are a small number of board games available to play in the bar and the pub hosts regular live music nights. There is a spacious beer garden at one side of the pub, though part of this is used by campers. There is a stream that runs alongside the beer garden and small children will need to be carefully supervised, as there is a small drop into the stream.

Accommodation

There are just three rooms available at the Fox & Hounds so you won’t feel overcrowded here. Rooms are spacious and feature wooden furniture that is in keeping with the period nature of the property. There is one family room that features a large double bed and the space for an additional z-bed. There is one double room and one twin.

All rooms have en-suite facilities and benefit from complimentary toiletries, tea and coffee making facilities, and free Wi-Fi. Two rooms benefit from views over the village. Breakfast is included in the room rate. Additionally, camping is available in the beer garden for a limited number of tents.
