The Screes Inn (Nether Wasdale)

Named for the scree that dominates the landscape around Wastwater and Wasdale Valley, the Screes Inn is located in Nether Wasdale at the start of the Wasdale Valley, close to the south-western shore of Wastwater. This pub is sister pub to the Strands Inn that is located directly opposite. The Strands is a much larger pub with a micro-brewery attached and the Screes was bought by the owners of the Strands in 2017.

Since then it has been operated almost as an extension of the Strands and during the quieter periods it is closed with customers directed to the Strands. Before its change in ownership the inn was fully refurbished and boasts of fresh interiors with real fires and comfortable seating.

Food and Drink

As the Screes is owned and operated by the owners of the Strands it should be of no surprise to learn that ale produced by the Strands micro-brewery is served here, with five different varieties available at any one time. You can purchase additional bottles of the micro-brewery’s beer across the road at the Strands Inn. In addition, the bar stocks the usual choices of wine, spirits, soft drinks, and hot drinks.

Food service times vary with the season and depend on what is happening at the Strands Inn. It’s worth noting that if you book a table in the Screes you may end up being moved to the Strands. Whilst the Strands Inn serves classic pub grub, the Screes has a slightly unusual menu for a Lake District Inn, offering a range of American diner style meals such as burgers, hot dogs, ribs, and chilli, with a good selection available for vegetarians and a limited number of choices for children.

Other Features

The pub welcomes dogs in the bar area. Outside at the front of the property there are a good number of picnic tables with views of the fells.

Accommodation

The Screes has eight en-suite guestrooms and these are booked through the Strands Inn. All rooms are equipped with televisions and Wi-Fi and there is a mixture of double and twin accommodation. The guest rooms were included in the recent refurbishment but amenities are basic. Breakfast is included in the room rate and is served at the Strands Inn.
