The Station Inn (Oxenholme)
Brilliant for families with children, the Station Inn is a traditional country inn located on the edge of the Lake District, within walking distance of Oxenholme Station that has direct trains to Windermere. The inn is housed in a former farmhouse. It is a popular stopping point for those attempting one of the coast-to-coast cycle routes and is a five-minute drive from Kendal.
Along with a bar and dining room, the inn has a small number of overnight guestrooms, a spacious beer garden with a large play area, and a campsite. The inn has recently been refurbished, creating an elegant yet cosy interior.
Food & Drink
Photo thanks to the Station Inn
The Station Inn serves four real ales. There are two changing ales supplied by a variety of breweries and two permanent ales supplied by the nearby Hawkshead Brewery and the Moorhouse Brewery based in Lancashire. There is a fairly reasonable wine list, as well as the usual choice of whiskies, spirits, and soft drinks.
The Menu
On Mondays through to Fridays, food is served from noon until 2.30pm, with special lunch time promotions, and then again from 5pm until 9pm. At the weekend, food is available throughout the day from noon until 9pm. The modern menu features a good mixture of pub classics, such as fish & chips and steak & ale pie, along with more imaginative dishes, including a seafood platter and various daily specials.
There is a choice of sandwiches and, for those with a gluten intolerance, there are a number of options. There is a children’s menu with a good number of options to appease fussy eaters. On Sundays, a three-course roast dinner is available with a choice of meats, and booking is advised.
Other Features
The Station Inn is very popular with families with children thanks to its large beer garden that includes a giant children’s play area, a crazy golf course, and some resident alpacas. A quiz is held each Wednesday evening at 9pm.
Accommodation
The inn has seven rooms available on a bed and breakfast basis. Rooms are simply decorated in a classic style and feature all of the basic amenities, including an en-suite bathroom, television, and tea and coffee making facilities. There are a mixture of double and family rooms available. A full cooked breakfast is served each morning and packed lunches can be provided on request.
For motorhome and caravan owners, the inn has a small hardstanding campsite. There are no facilities other than a drinking water tap and waste disposal, so you will need your own toilet / washing facilities, although the pub toilets are available during the day.
