The Ship (Dovenby)
A short drive from Cockermouth in the village of Dovenby, the Ship is a family-friendly gastro pub that also offers basic accommodation. The pub is popular amongst locals as it offers a decent selection of ales and wines, however, the accommodation has been reported back to us as not being quite up to scratch so please use caution when booking a room here.
Inside the pub, there is a bar with leather sofas and open fires with an ample dining space and, outside, the pub benefits from a spacious beer garden surrounded by the farmlands of West Cumbria.

The Ship has three hand pumps available for real ale and offers a changing selection of beers sourced from around the country. In addition, the Ship offers a good range of premium beers, lagers, and ciders, as well as lesser known brands from up and coming breweries. There is a substantial wine list that has a selection of quality wines from around the globe, and an excellent choice of whiskies, gins, rums, and other spirits from local and international distilleries.
The Menu
Food is served every day, though please check with the pub for exact serving times as these are bound to change. Local and seasonal ingredients are used wherever possible. During the lunch service diners can opt for a light meal, such as sandwiches, ciabattas, jacket potatoes, paninis, and salads, or opt for something more substantial from the main menu. The main menu features typical gastro-pub dishes, such as a homemade steak and ale pie, chicken breast with a garlic sauce, and local sirloin steak.
Vegetarians have three dishes to choose from with additional dishes available on the daily specials board that offers a range of imaginative and seasonal meals. On Sundays, a full traditional roast dinner is served with a choice of beef, turkey, or the weekly special. Children are extremely well-catered for here, with an under 12 menu that has ten dishes to choose from with all the favourites featured and ice cream included in the price.

The beer garden at the Ship has been refurbished in recent years and is a large open space with plenty of picnic benches and areas for children to play in. The pub uses the garden to host regular family friendly events, such as BBQs and fun days. The pub is very accommodating to children with a selection of toys available.

The Ship has three guestrooms that feature very basic furnishings. All three rooms are double rooms and each one has an en-suite shower room, however, not all of them have a bathtub. There is also a television with satellite channels, tea and coffee making facilities, and complimentary toiletries. It’s worth noting that all rooms require access via a flight of stairs and breakfast is not included.
