The Belle Vue (Papcastle)
The Belle Vue in Papcastle has had a difficult history in recent years. Between 2016 and early 2018 it briefly became known as the Spotted Pig and had an unsuccessful foray into fine dining.
Today, it is back to being a traditional style pub restaurant that serves good food with real ale. The pub is located in the village of Papcastle on the outskirts of Cockermouth. It’s popular with local residents as a place to grab an evening meal and therefore booking a table is recommended.

The pub’s opening hours coincide with its food service hours. It is open on Mondays and then Wednesday to Saturday from noon until 2.30pm and then again from 6pm until 11pm (closed Tuesdays). On Sundays, the pub is open all day from noon until 10.30pm with food available throughout. The menu is a modern take on typical pub food. Classics ,such as steak pie, lasagne, and fish & chips are all present, along with more contemporary favourites, such as Cantonese style steak and King Prawn Thai Curry.
Furthermore, there are a range of burgers and, for chicken lovers, there’s a dedicated chicken menu that includes the pub’s celebrated Chicken Michael. Roast dinners are available daily. There are a few choices for vegetarians and the pub is popular with those on gluten-free diets thanks to its extensive selection of suitable dishes. Children are also catered for here with five options to choose from.
The pub has four cask ales available at any one time, including local favourite Jennings Bitter that is brewed just down the road in Cockermouth and Marston’s Brewery classic golden ale Wainwright. The large bar stocks a plethora of other beverages, including lagers, ciders, wines, whiskies, vodkas, and gins, with some locally produced varieties. There are a good range of soft drinks and the coffee is locally roasted by John Watt of Carlisle.
