The Mill at Ulverston
Tucked away in a small side street in the centre of Ulverston, the Mill is the place to go for good food and excellent real ale. The converted watermill features three distinct bars and a restaurant. On the ground floor, you will find the Cask Bar, popular with real ale drinkers and home to the original water wheel. On the first floor, the Terrace Bar is a relaxing space that benefits from a large outdoor terrace.
The first floor is also home to the sophisticated restaurant that sits above the water wheel and was once the milling room. On the top floor, the Loft Bar is Ulverston’s only Cocktail bar. This chic and stylish attic space sees regular live music and comedy nights. The pub has recently appointed a new head chef, Steven Doherty, who previously ran a three Michelin star restaurant.

Fans of real ale would do well to head to the ground floor Cask Bar at the Mill where they have a staggering ten real ales available. Four are always sourced from the Lancaster Brewery, whilst the rest come from Cumbrian and national breweries, all carefully chosen. In addition to the real ales, the bar serves a wide mixture of beers, lagers, and ciders from around the world, and the knowledgeable staff can advise you on your choices.
The bar also stocks a good choice of whiskies and spirits, as well as soft drinks and teas and coffees. The Terrace Bar has a smaller selection of drinks available and is where you can enjoy a drink outside during the warmer months. Cocktail fans should head up to the Loft, where there is an impressive cocktail menu that features all the classics and some more unusual combinations.
The Menu
Food is served Monday to Saturday from noon until 3pm and then again from 6pm until 6.30pm. On Sundays, food is served from noon until 6pm. The pub has a separate restaurant room on the first floor, but food can also be enjoyed in the Terrace Bar and the Cask Bar. The menus are updated regularly and make the use of fresh and seasonal produce. At lunch time, diners can enjoy sandwiches, light bites, or build their own Deli Board by choosing from a selection of tapas style nibbles.
A limited choice of main dishes is also available at lunch time. The main menu has something to suit most tastes, including classic dishes, such as beef and ale stew, as well as more sophisticated offerings, such as Scottish venison. There are some choices for vegetarians and there is a children’s menu that features several much-loved dishes. On Sundays, there is a three-course Sunday lunch menu available alongside the usual menu, and this is very popular, with booking highly recommended.
