The Flying Pig is one of Bowness-On-Windermere’s newest pubs, having been opened in December 2015 in a building formerly occupied by a restaurant. The new owners have completely transformed the building, creating a welcoming, modern space where visitors can enjoy a pint of real ale and a homecooked meal. The name of the pub is reference to the idea that good British pub food is impossible to find.

The owners aim to prove the impossible is possible, hence the “Flying Pig”. The pub is located in the centre of Bowness-On-Windermere and adjacent to the popular World of Beatrix Potter attraction. It has a children’s menu and is therefore very popular with families visiting the attraction and seeking an evening meal.

The pub has four pumps for cask ale and serves a changing selection of real ales that are usually sourced from local breweries, including the Windermere Brewing Company, Bowness-Bay Brewing, and the Kirkby Lonsdale Brewery. There’s a good choice of draught and bottled beers and a fairly reasonably priced wine list with around 12 different varieties that suit most tastes.

The bar stocks an excellent selection of gins with over 50 available and one showcased each week as the “gin of the week”. The bar is also home to an array of whiskies, spirits, and soft drinks, as well as hot drinks, including barista style coffees.

The Menu

Food is served everyday at the Flying Pig between noon and 9pm. The imaginative menu combines pub classics, such as scampi and chips, with modern favourites, such as chicken and avocado salad. There’s a good selection of pies supplied by a local pie specialist, and on Sundays, a full roast dinner is available with all of the trimmings.

The pub has an early bird deal on weekdays between 4pm and 6pm with discounted rates for two and three course meals with select dishes. Children are welcome here and the menu not only includes the usual favourites but also some of the main menu dishes with reduced portion sizes.
