The Ship Inn (Coniston)
Around a quarter of a mile from the centre of Coniston village, the Ship Inn is a traditional 18th century pub with a warm and cosy atmosphere. Part of the Robinsons’ brewery, the Ship is led by a friendly husband and wife team and offers a good range of real ale, along with home cooked food and recently renovated accommodation.
The inn is overlooked by the iconic Old Man of Coniston fell and the Cumbria Way trail runs close by, giving easy access from the inn to Coniston Water. The inn welcomes walkers with muddy boots, dogs, and children, and its welcoming interiors with a traditional pub style décor and a roaring log fire make it the perfect place to relax after a long walk.

The Ship Inn is part of the Robinsons Brewery, who are based in Stockport and own around 300 pubs in the north of England. As a result, you won’t find locally brewed cask ale here, but the selection available from Robinsons is highly regarded. You will find their award winning ales Dizzy Blonde, Wizard, Trooper, Cumbria Way and Robinsons Smooth here, as well as a good choice of draught beers and lagers.
There are eight wines available by the glass, including a delightful Malbec, as well as two sparkling wines available to buy by the bottle. There are five gins to choose from, including the Lakes Distillery One Gin, with a good choice of tonic waters available. In addition, there is a good choice of spirits, whiskies, soft drinks, and hot drinks.
The Menu
Food is served daily between noon and 2pm and then again between 6pm and 8.45pm. At lunch time, there is a great selection of sandwiches and jacket potatoes available, or you could opt for the classic Ploughman’s. The evening menu is extensive with something to suit most tastes. There are classic pub dishes, such as lasagne and steak.
The pub also serves four varieties of curry, four types of pie, three of which are “proper pies” with shortcrust pastry, and three varieties of Chicago Town style pizzas that are also available to takeaway. There is a good choice for children, and vegetarians have a number of options.
Other Features

There is no traditional beer garden here, but the Ship does have a number of picnic benches outside the front of the pub. There is parking, but it is very limited and you might find it preferable to park in Coniston and take the short walk along the Cumbria Way to the pub. Dogs are welcome here and will be greeted by the pub’s own resident pooch. There is no regular, weekly quiz, but the pub does occasionally hold quiz nights to raise money for charity.
