The Troutbeck Inn
The Troutbeck Inn near Penrith is a former railway inn and now specialises in serving excellent food and comfortable accommodation. Food is available three times a day here, with non residents welcome at breakfast. The pub serves real ale and welcomes dogs and families. There is a small beer garden with delightful views and the inn has three self-catered holiday cottages.
The White Lion Inn (Patterdale)
The White Lion Inn at Patterdale, near Ullswater, is a traditional and rustic pub that welcomes walkers with muddy boots, families with children, and four legged friends. The Mill Inn (Mungrisdale)
The Mill Inn is a small 17th century inn located at the foot of Blencathra. Owned by Robinsons, the pub serves real ale, and food is served all day, every day. Family and dog friendly, the pub features a pool table and a beer garden, and overnight accommodation is available. Steeped in history, William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge once stayed here.
The General Wolfe
The General Wolfe is located in the centre of Penrith. It serves food all day at weekends and the menu has a good range of choices that include pub classics. The Queen’s Head (Tirril)
The Queen’s Head Inn in Tirril is a historic 18th century inn that was once owned by the Wordsworth family. Today it is a Robinsons Brewery pub that serves real ale and good food. The pub welcomes dogs and has a covered outdoor space to the rear. Inside the pub is filled with period features and it boasts of a pool table.

The Punchbowl Inn at Askham is a traditional rural inn that offers good food throughout the day. Inside you will find intriguing period features and locally brewed real ale. The Old Crown (Hesket Newmarket)
The Old Crown is a traditional style pub with a twist. It is entirely owned by the local community as a co-operative and was the first pub of its kind in England. The Horse & Farrier is a traditional rural pub in Dacre, an ancient hamlet that lies close to Ullswater and Pooley Bridge. Recently refurbished, this small pub is filled with rustic charm and serves a good choice of real ale. Food is available from Tuesday – Friday, with a choice of dishes to suit most tastes. The George & Dragon (Clifton)
The George & Dragon is an award winning pub that is owned and operated by the Lowther Estate. Located close to Penrith and Lowther Castle the pub is committed to using locally sourced goods wherever possible. You will find real ale from local breweries here, along with food prepared using ingredients grown on the Lowther estate. Dogs and children are welcome here.
Fell Bar (Penrith)
The Fell Bar is the tap bar for the Fell Brewery, a small and independent brewery based in South Cumbria. The bar is located in the centre of Penrith and stocks a wide range of ales, not just from the brewery but from other local producers, as well as a range of wines and gins. There is a fortnightly quiz and dogs are welcome.
The Dog Beck – Wetherspoons (Penrith)
Located in the town centre Wetherspoon’s Penrith branch is named the Dog Beck for the stream that runs underground the town. Open daily from 8am this is a great place to grab a bite to eat at any hour during the day, especially if you are on a budget. The pub has a great choice of real ales sourced from around the UK.
The Dog & Gun (Skelton)
The Dog & Gun in Skelton, near Penrith, is a small pub that is focused on serving excellent food. Reopened in 2017 the new owners have completely changed the Dog & Gun from a failing village pub into an award winning dining experience. With limited opening hours, reservations are recommended and locally brewed real ale is available here.
Dockray Hall (Penrith)
Dockray Hall is a beautiful historic pub in the centre of Penrith. Once home to Richard III, the last of the Plantagenets, today it is an award winning gastro pub that is owned by the Cumbria Legendary Ales brewery. This dog friendly pub serves a fabulous range of cask ales and gins alongside delicious home cooked dishes using local produce.
Cross Keys Inn Carleton Village (Penrith)
The Cross Keys Inn is located on the eastern edge of Penrith in the village of Carleton. The inn has a good reputation locally for serving up great food, with an emphasis on locally sourced produce. The Boot & Shoe Inn (Greystoke)
The Boot & Shoe Inn is a friendly family run inn located between Penrith and the eastern border of the Lake District national park. This pub serves food twice a day and real ale is available here.
