Valentine’s Day will soon be upon us and lovers everywhere will be heard uttering those four special words: “Will you marry me?” If you have chosen to book a trip to the Lake District to propose to your loved one then your are in fantastic company. In a poll for Snaptrip last year, 56% of Brits agreed that the national park is Britain’s most romantic destination. With so many fells and lakes to choose from, you might be wondering how you will decide where to propose, so let us help you out with our seven most romantic places in the Lake District.

Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale Water

Ennerdale Water

It’s easy to miss Ennerdale Water off your Lake District itinerary. This large glacial lake is located in the Western lakes and along with Wastwater it is one of the most remote, with visitors needing to drive around a large section of the Lake District to reach it. Whilst Wastwater is a popular spot for walkers who make the long journey to climb up Scafell Pike, Ennerdale is quieter, offering a secluded and peaceful spot even in peak tourist season. Perhaps this is why Bill Clinton chose the lake’s shore to propose to Hilary. The western shore of the Lake has fabulous views and great picnic spots.

Aira Force & Glencoyne Bay, Ullswater

Aira Force Falls

Aira Force Falls

The stretch of land along the northern shore of Ullswater, known as Glencoyne Bay, is said to have inspired Lakes poet, William Wordsworth, to scribe his most well-known verse, “I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud". His sister, Dorothy, wrote in her journal that she “never saw daffodils so beautiful” and in the spring the entire area is carpeted with bright yellow flowers.

Valentine’s Day might be a little early for most of the blooms, however, early flowering varieties may be spotted and the woodland walk is delightfully peaceful with views of Ullswater. The nearby Aira Force waterfall is simply spectacular and a walk combining the two areas is certainly worth the effort. Celebrate your engagement after with a large slice of cake from the National Trust café at Aira Force.

Haystacks, Above Buttermere

Views of Buttermere from the path leading to Haystacks

Haystacks fell sits proudly above Buttermere and at the top climbers are rewarded with views stretching out over the lake and beyond to Crummock Water. It was one of Alfred Wainwright’s favourite spots, and indeed he loved it so much that his final wish was to have his ashes scattered there. The climb is fairly easy going and towards the summit there are a number of interesting features, including tarns and rocky outcrops. If you are confident in descending in low light and darkness, then the summit is a perfect place to watch the sun set over the lakes below.

Darling Fell, Above Loweswater

Darling Fell Summit

Darling Fell Summit

There’s something lovely and romantic about being able to climb a fell named “Darling.” This low level fell sits above Loweswater and is ascended via a short, steep walk from the lake side. However, it’s not just the name that makes this fell romantic. From the top, the panoramic views are delightful, taking in Crummock Water, Buttermere, Grasmoor, and the Cumbrian coastal plain. Like Haystacks, this is another fell that is perfect for watching the sunset with views towards the western coast. However, you do need to be confident in your ability to navigate your way down in low light.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

Many people agree that Castlerigg Stone Circle is a magical and mystical place. Perhaps it’s the questions over its mysterious origins, or its placement amongst the fells that gives the impression of being at the centre of a large amphitheatre. There is a stillness about the place that brings a sense of peace. It is a stunning setting for a proposal that will undoubtedly be a moment that will not be forgotten any time soon. It’s also easy to access, with no strenuous hill walks required (you can park right next to it if you prefer). After your loved one has said “Yes” you can celebrate with a meal in Keswick which is within walking distance.

Blea Tarn, Little Langdale

Nestled in the valley of Little Langdale, Blea Tarn is a small, picturesque mountain lake with outstanding views of the Langdale Pikes. It’s a Site of Special Scientific Interest thanks to the abundance of wildlife that inhabit the area. It’s an area that is particularly appealing to those who are new to fell walking or are unable to walk long distances, thanks to its proximity to a National Trust car park. Despite being close to the (minor) road, Blea Tarn is incredibly peaceful and gives a sense of the remote. After, you can celebrate your forthcoming marriage with a drink in the famous Sticklebarn pub close to the tarn.

Colwith Force, Near Elterwater

Colwith Force

Waterfalls do tend to be romantic spots and here in the Lake District we have a large number of them. Colwith Force is particularly delightful thanks to its unusual shape with multiple spouts and its secluded woodland location. Best of all, it’s very easy to access by either parking on the road near to the falls, or taking a short stroll along the Cumbria Way from Skelwith Bridge where there is another delightful waterfall.
