Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre
Lowther Castle
The grounds of Lowther Castle provide a beautiful setting for the Lakeland Bird Of Prey Centre. Located within its own walled garden, this sanctuary is home to 150 birds including: falcons, buzzards, kites, owls, and eagles, both native to the UK and from further afield.
The centre is close to the entrance to Lowther Castle so it’s worth considering combining a visit to the two attractions to make a full day out.
Planning Your Visit
Things To See
Buzzard, Bird of Prey
You can wander through the large collection of aviaries, each one set up to cater for the occupants needs. It’s best to arrive an hour or two before 2pm when the flight demonstration takes place to give you the opportunity to view all of the aviaries.
The centre aims to conserve these majestic creatures and in addition to a rescue and rehabilitation programme they also have breeding programmes so at certain times of the year you may be able to meet some chicks.
At 2pm you are invited to sit and watch a two-hour flight demonstration where various birds are encouraged to demonstrate their flying skills. If you are lucky, you may be chosen to have one of the birds land on your (gloved) arm.
Useful Information
On site there is the delightfully quaint Walled Garden Vintage Tea Room. Here you will find a selection of tempting home baked treats, as well as light meals with a good selection of vegetarian and vegan alternatives.
The centre is wheelchair accessible throughout, however, guide dogs are not permitted in the centre due to the distress that their presence would cause the birds.
There is a small gift shop on site where you buy souvenirs to support the work of the centre.
