Don't let the rain put you off visiting the Lake District, there is plenty to do indoors as well as outdoors and at the Lakes Aquarium, one of Cumbria’s most popular tourist attractions, here you can explore the water’s wildlife whilst staying warm and dry.
Located at Lakeside, on the south-western tip of Lake Windermere, the aquarium has a plethora of strange and wonderful aquatic wildlife, as well as a small selection of land-dwelling creatures.

Things To See
The lakes of Cumbria may appear serene on the surface, but they hide a whole world of fascinating and curious creatures, with many of them on display at the Aquarium. There are sections covering both local lakes and those from further afield. In the Lake District section you can view native creatures such as Crayfish and Perch, as well as mammals such as Harvest Mice.
Children are encouraged to learn more about the water cycle and the affect this has had on the landscapes we see around us. There is an Asian Otter enclosure with feeding times and talks available. Watch out for the Piranhas in the Americas section, and visit the creatures of the rainforests that include Marmosets and Boa Constrictors.
There also Leopard Tortoises, a nursery for native creatures such as Cod, Mullet, and Lobster, and you can meet creepy crawlies during daily talks. Don’t forget to try and find Nemo (Clownfish) on your way through!
To make a full day out, consider combining your entrance ticket with a boat trip with the Windermere Lake Cruises and a train ride on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. The aquarium is located very close to both Lakeside station and jetty.
