August in the Lake District is jam packed with wonderful summer events, such as epic music festival weekends, outdoor theatre opportunities and a huge selection of agricultural shows happening all over Cumbria. If you somehow missed all the July agricultural shows, fear not, as there are at least SEVEN happening this month!

Lake District Summer Music

This music series if perfect for anyone who loves classical music and/or who may be a classical musician. The Lake District Summer Music is scheduled for 29th July through to 7th August and focuses on all things classical music. There is a fantastic schedule of music planned, including performances and masterclasses, so be sure to check out the official website for all the details.

Tullie House has an amazing selection of events happening this summer with their Summer Craft Fair planned toward the end of August from the 25th to the 29th, as well as an Outdoor Magic Show for Kids from the 9th to the 18th of August. Other events include an August Lunchtime Talk with Helen Millican, entitled ‘Radio Cumbria Exploits’, as well as a Summer Ceramics Workshop for Children, which runs from the end of July to the 10th of August. Cartmel Show

The Cartmel Show is another famous Cumbrian agricultural show that is taking place on Wednesday the 3rd of August from 8.30am. It is a perfect day out for the family with animals, trade stands, activities for kids and more.

Lake District Folk Weekend

The Lake District Folk Weekend is your typical folk weekend with a fantastic line-up of folk music and dance sessions, including a live Ceilidh one of the nights. It’s scheduled for August 5th, 6th and 7th with tickets and further information available on their website.

Lowther Castle: Outdoor Theatre – Peter Pan

Lowther Castle Peter Pan

Lowther Castle is hosting the Illyria Theatre Company on Thursday the 11th of August who will be hosting an outdoor evening performance of J.M. Barrie’s Peter Pan. The show will begin around 5.30pm and will last around 2 hours, including a 20 minute interval. The show is suitable for 5+ with tickets costing £15 for adults and £10 for children 5-16. There will be free entry to the castle from 2pm on the day and visitors are encouraged to bring picnics, something to sit on and wet-weather gear in case it rains.

Rydal Show

The 117th Rydal Show is scheduled for Thursday the 12th of August at Rydal Park in Ambleside. This agricultural focuses mainly on sheepdog trials, as well as a hound show with the usual trade stands and various competitions/demonstrations taking place throughout the day.

Muncaster Castle: Race the Tide

Race the Tide

Race the Tide is planned for the 12th through to the 14th of August at Muncaster Castle. Runners of all levels are welcome and will be completing a 10k wild and natural route with obstacles, which includes crawling through mud, wading and scrambling through rivers, and scrambling to the top of wooded hillsides. The race starts and finishes at Muncaster Castle with a celebratory Ceilidh and dinner in the barn afterwards. There will also be planned weekend activities with accommodation options at the Muncaster Castle campsite.

Free Guided National Park Walks with Classic Train Journey

Free Guided National Park Walks

The Lake District National Park are organising free guided walks from Ravenglass Station to the Green on 27th July and 13th August, as well as Dalegarth Station to Stanley Ghyll on 10th July and 28th August. Whilst the guided walk is free, train fares do apply on the railway lines. Each route involves a classic train journey through the picturesque Lake District and a beautiful walk through the Cumbrian fells. Participants should dress appropriately and pack their own lunch.

The Lakeland Country Fair is taking place this August in Coniston near Torver on Sunday the 21st from 12 noon. Tickets are just £5 for adults and £3 for children. Like the many agricultural shows that take place in the Lake District, the Lakeland Country Fair is your typical Cumbrian show with animal displays, dog shows, races, trade stands, a bouncy castle for children, a licensed bar and barbecue – and much more!

Green Man Survival: Hostile Environnent Survival Course

Hostile Environnent Survival Course

Green Man Survival is putting on an epic seven-day Hostile Environment Survival Course from Monday the 22nd of August through to Sunday the 28th. The course costs £895 and will be taught by an experienced team of people with both military and civilian backgrounds. The course will teach you how to survive in a hostile environment and you will be living in the shelter you create yourself. You’ll learn many practical skills, including how to procure your own water, foraging, animal tracking, tactical movement, escape and evasion techniques and more.

Hutton-in-the-Forest will be host to the Astral Circus on Sunday the 21st of August and also the Wannasee Festival from the 26th to the 28th of August. The Wannasee Festival is especially popular amongst music lovers, as it offers live music at affordable prices in the picturesque setting of Hutton-in-the-Forest. You can either come for just a day or stay for a full weekend with camping opportunities available.

Dalemain has two events planned for the month of August with the Fell Pony Breed Show on the 7th of August and the Cumbria Classic Car Show on the 14th of August. The first event is perfect for horse lovers and the second for – you guessed it – car lovers!

The Gosforth Show is taking place on Sunday the 20th of August and will have displays and talks involving sheep, cattle, horses, dogs, poultry, etc – all typical of a Cumbrian agricultural show. New for 2022, however, includes a rural crafts tent, and what looks like a pretty epic performance from Broke FMX with cycle stunts to amaze the crowds as shown above!

Grasmere Lakeland Sports and Show will be on Sunday the 28th of August this year and is a wonderful action-packed day for the whole family with the usual agricultural show displays, as well as a focus on sports and races that you can get involved in yourself, such as fell running and other various sports. Keswick Show

The Keswick Show is planned for the end of the month on the 29th of August and is sure to be a fun day out for the whole family. Some of the attractions include a sheep pen, dog shows, wrestling competitions, a poultry tent, as well as an industrial marquee. There will also be the usual trade stands with food with plenty of other activities planned.

Ennerdale Show

Ennerdale Show

The Ennerdale Show is happening on the 31st of August close to the shores of Ennerdale and the Ennerdale Valley. Activities take place throughout the day and include the traditional sports and pastimes of the area. Sheep, horses, dogs, poultry, vintage machinery will all be on display and you can even place a bet with some of the local bookmakers on four different hound trailing races that will take place. There will also be sports for children, Cumberland and Westmorland wrestling, as well as refreshments and a bar.
