Appleby Leisure Centre
Located on the banks of the River Eden on the eastern edge of Cumbria, Appleby Leisure Centre features both a swimming pool and a fitness suite. Like most of the leisure centre facilities in the Lake District and Cumbria, Appleby Leisure Centre is managed by Better, who offer a range of options for memberships and visitors across their facilities. After your visit, you can take a stroll along the River Eden, or visit the pretty town centre that is just a few minutes’ walk away.
Planning Your Visit
Gym

Thanks to a grant from the local authority, the gym at Appleby Leisure Centre had a major refurbishment in 2012. It is equipped with a range of cardiovascular and resistance machines from elite manufacturer, Life Fitness. There are rowing machines and two Trixter Bikes, designed to give the user an outdoor cycling experience, indoors. If you sign up as a member you will receive a personal, tailored fitness plan, and instructors are available at all times should you require assistance.
To use the gym facilities you can either sign up for membership, or choose the pay and play option, where you pay an initial small fee, and are then able to access the facilities on a pay as you go basis, with discounts available for the pool and fitness classes.
Fitness Classes
Appleby Leisure Centre has a limited amount of space available for fitness classes, and has therefore teamed up with the nearby community centre, Appleby Hub, to offer a range of classes. Spinning classes and aquafit are offered at the centre, whilst at the Hub you will find Yoga, Pilates, Aerobics, and Extreme Interval Fitness. You can sign up as a one off to classes, but you must book in advance. Classes cost £5.90 for non-members and £4.70 for pay and play members.
Swimming Pools

Appleby Leisure Centre has two pools that are adjacent to one another in one large hall. The main pool is 25m long and has four lanes. There is a learner pool that is ideal for young children, or adults who are less confident in the water.
The pool has timetabled sessions each day, with set times for general swimming and swimming schools. This includes dedicated sessions for under 5s, over 50s, and those with disabilities. Some sessions do require advance booking, so it’s best to check in advance of your visit. Swimming costs just £4.35 for adults who are not members.
Features for Kids
Each weekend, the pool holds a family fun session with a huge inflatable slide that sits on the water. Throughout the week, lessons are available for children starting at age 3 and up. The pool is also available for private hire for birthday parties and includes the use of the inflatable slide.
