Leisure Centres in the Lake District
Most of the leisure centre facilities in Cumbria are located outside of the national park border in the various towns and cities that surround it. There are 17 centres in total with all but four of them offering swimming facilities.
Thanks to a community grant programme aimed at improving the fitness levels of residents in Cumbria, many of the facilities listed here have benefited from full or partial refurbishment in recent years, making them attractive places to visit. All have a gym, ranging in size from small spaces with a limited number of machines to vast, 100 station workout zones, and most provide fitness classes. In addition, many of the centres have some great additional features to help you stay active, including indoor and outdoor sports pitches and courts, climbing walls and bowling greens. Children are well-catered for in Cumbria’s leisure centres with soft play centres, pool side splash zones and gymnastics clubs.
Workington Leisure Centre
Brand new for 2016, Workington Leisure Centre is an £11 million state of the art sports complex with everything you need to keep fit and active. There are two swimming pools, a gym, two fitness studios, a climbing wall, a sports hall, two squash courts, and three outdoor pitches. Finish off by unwinding in the sauna and steam room.
Whitehaven Sports Centre
Whitehaven Sports Centre is located within the centre of Whitehaven and is a fantastic fitness and leisure resource. The huge sports hall provides an array of sports to try, including traditional games such as football and netball, and more unique sports such as trampolining and roller skating. There is a gym, fitness studio, soft play area and creche facilities.
Ulverston Leisure Centre
Home to Cumbria’s largest tennis centre, Ulverston Leisure Centre boasts of 9 tennis courts. The courts are complemented by an all weather, all sports outdoor pitch, a crown bowling green, a swimming pool with fell views, and a modern gym. The centre is located on the southern edge of the town with some fitness classes held at alternative venues.
Trinity Leisure Centre
Trinity Leisure Centre is a small facility close to the centre of Carlisle. The centre is a joint operation between Better Leisure and Trinity School, and is therefore only open evenings and weekends during the school term time. It is home to a swimming pool, small gym, and a sports hall that is available to hire, either for sports or birthday parties.
The Sands Leisure Centre
Cumbria’s number one venue for entertainment and leisure, the Sands Centre, combines conferencing and entertainment with sporting facilities. Here you will find a 100 station gym with top of the range equipment, fitness classes galore, a sports hall, squash courts, climbing wall, and cafe bar. Located on the edge of Carlisle city centre, the centre has something to keep everyone happy.
The Pools Swimming and Health Centre
The Pools Swimming and Health Centre offers a unique experience from times long past. The centre is home to the Victorian Health Suite, where you can experience a spa day in 19th century style. In addition there are three swimming pools here, offering a good mix of general swimming, lessons, and family fun. There is also a small gym open to non-members.
The Park Leisure Centre
A great facility for the entire family, The Park Leisure Centre in Barrow-In-Furness has features that will please fitness fanatics, adults looking to start a new fitness regime, and families with children. There are two pools, including one with a splash play area, an adult gym and separate junior gym, fitness studio, a sports hall, soft play, and a climbing wall.
Penrith Leisure Centre
One of the largest leisure centres in Cumbria, Penrith Leisure Centre features two swimming pools, a five zone gym and fitness studio, a large climbing wall, an indoor bowls rink, a soft play area, a sports hall, and a café. Outside there is a full sized artificial, floodlit pitch, and a skate park. Located in the centre of Penrith with free parking.
Morton Leisure Centre
Morton Leisure Centre is hosted within the Richard Rose Morton Academy School but is open to the public at set times each day. Here you will find a 20m long pool with features that offer greater accessibility to disabled users, and a 50 station gym with everything you need to maintain your fitness level, as well as regular fitness classes.
Millom Recreational Centre
Millom Recreational Centre offers a huge number of ways to keep fit, whether it be in the small but well-equipped gym, in one of the myriad of fitness classes available, or via hire of the sports hall, where you can play a host of sports including badminton and football. It’s also a family favourite, with a brilliant selection of activities available for children.
Keswick Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre
Keswick Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre combines a family friendly pool with a well-equipped gym and a mountain bike hire facility. With day and weekly passes available for the gym, and timetabled sessions in the pool for both adults and families with children, the centre is a great resource to help both local residents and visitors to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Kendal Leisure Centre
With a multi-use sports hall, gym, two swimming pools, and three fitness studios, you are almost guaranteed to find an activity to suit your needs at Kendal Leisure Centre. You can take a dip in the pool, workout in the recently refurbished gym, or even show off your moves in a roller disco. This accessible venue has something for everyone.
Dalton Leisure Centre
Dalton Leisure Centre is packed with things to do for the whole family. Its main feature is the family friendly swimming pool, where you will find an interactive splash play area. In addition, the centre has separate cardiovascular and resistance gyms, two fitness studios offering various exhilarating classes, three squash courts available to hire, and a café bar.
Cockermouth Leisure Centre
Cockermouth Leisure Centre has benefited greatly in recent years from grant money aimed at improving the fitness levels of people in Cumbria. The gym has been completely refurbished and offers state of the art cardiovascular and resistance equipment. There is also a 25m pool, two fitness studios, a sports hall offering a range of sports, and an indoor climbing wall.
ActivZone Gym and Sports Facility
ActivZone is a small centre housed within the Lakes College in West Cumbria, between Cockermouth and Workington. The centre is primarily used by students and paying members, but visitors can attend the classes and hire the sports facilities which include a state of the art artificial grass pitch and large sports hall. The on-site Graduates Restaurant serves delicious food at low prices.
Appleby Leisure Centre
Nestled between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales, Appleby Leisure Centre is considerably smaller than its Penrith counterpart, but it is a valuable community resource. Home to a fitness suite that has been refurbished to a high standard and two swimming pools, here you can take a class, enjoy a gym workout, or even learn how to swim.
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre
Copeland Pool and Fitness Centre is a great centre to visit if you are staying in western Lake District and are looking to maintain your fitness regime or have a splash in the pool with your family. In addition to the main pool, there is a learner pool, gym, and fitness studio, with activities available for all ages and abilities.
