Workington Leisure Centre

Griffin Street, Workington, CA14 2DX

Purpose built and newly opened in 2016, Workington Leisure Centre is an £11 million facility that has energised local residents since it opened, doubling the amount of users when compared to those who used the old facility this centre replaced. It’s hardly surprising when you look at the features available. There are two swimming pools, an enormous gym with Technogym equipment, a sports hall, two squash courts, two fitness studios, three outdoor pitches, a climbing wall, and a sauna and steam room.

There is something for everyone at the centre with lessons and activities for children, clubs for the over 55s, and a range of accessibility features, including a Changing Places facility, moveable floor in one swimming pool, and a poolside hoist.

Gym

Workington Leisure Centre Gym

The gym at Workington Leisure Centre is enormous, with just under 100 stations of equipment, from top-of-the-range brands, such as Technogym. The main room is brightly lit with a modern feel and houses the cardiovascular and resistance training equipment. Most of the cardiovascular machines have built-in touch screen displays. Adjacent to the main gym, there is a weights room that is fully air-conditioned and features a good selection of free weights. There are also stretching areas with mats and exercise balls.

You must complete an induction before you use the gym, and thereafter, sessions cost £6.50 during peak times and £4.85 for off-peak times for non-members.

Fitness Classes

There are two studios at Workington Leisure Centre offering fitness classes. Classes available include spinning, interval training, yoga, core stability, aerobics and bootcamp training. Over in the pool there are water aerobics sessions. Classes cost £4.40 for non-members and must be booked in advance. Some classes require you to attend a lower level class before, so do check before you book.

Swimming Pools

Workington Leisure Centre Pool

As part of the new facility at Workington, two swimming pools were created with some fantastic features.

Main Pool

The main pool is 25m long and has 8 lanes, giving plenty of space for swimming and splashing. Here you will find most of the general swim sessions, along with sessions for adults-only, women-only, and splash time with floats and toys. There is a poolside hoist for improved accessibility. You can also learn to swim here, with lessons available for all ages and abilities.

Teaching Pool

The teaching pool is also used for lessons, as well as general swim sessions. In addition, parent and toddler swimming sessions are held here, as well as dedicated sessions for people with disabilities. The pool has a depth ranging between 0.5m and 1.6m, and features a moveable floor to enable better accessibility for people with mobility difficulties.

Sports

Indoors or outdoors, there are plenty of spaces at Workington Leisure Centre to play sports.

Indoor Sports Hall

This purpose built hall is available to hire and can accommodate a range of sports, including badminton, netball, and trampolining. Hire starts at £30 per hour for the hall, whilst a game of Badminton costs £5.35 per person.

Outdoor Pitches

Outside the centre you will find three artificially turfed pitches available to hire for between £15 and £25 per hour. These are ideal for hockey and football.

Squash Courts

The centre has two squash courts that can be hired for between £4.20 and £6 per hour. You do need to book these in advance of your visit.

Climbing Wall

A leisure centre in Cumbria would not be complete without a climbing wall, and Workington Leisure Centre has a great facility for this adrenaline fueled sport. Reaching up to 10 metres high with various overhangs and grades of difficulty, this is a great place to get into this popular sport and provides you with the preparation you need for tackling the Cumbrian fells. All safety equipment is provided. You can attend climbing taster sessions or courses with a qualified instructor, or just book and climb by yourself. Sessions start from £4.60.

Features for Kids

The centre holds junior sports courses during term time that are block booked. Sports include football, gymnastics, climbing, cheerleading, and squash. In addition, swimming lessons are available for all ages here.

During the school holidays, a play scheme operates that encourages children to get active with a range of sports to try, including short tennis, archery, and even snorkeling! You can hold birthday parties at the centre, either in the pool, in the sports hall, or on the climbing wall. Parties in the sports hall can involve football, multi-sports, trampolining, or a bouncy castle.

Other Features

Once you have finished your workout, why not head over to the centre’s steam room and sauna facility to relax and unwind? Also, every Monday, the centre hosts an over-55s club with swimming and sports activities combined with a social element.
