Morton Leisure Centre

Although it is set within the grounds of the Richard Rose Morton Academy school in Carlisle, Morton Leisure Centre is open to everyone with membership not required for any of the facilities.

The centre is home to a pool, gym, and fitness centre, and is located on the outskirts of Carlisle. The pool’s moveable floor makes this centre a popular one for individuals with disabilities and mobility difficulties.

Gym

The gym at Morton Leisure Centre is fairly substantial. In 2007, the centre received a 200,000 grant to fully refurbish the facility, and this resulted in 50 station gym being created.

The full range of cardiovascular equipment is available, including steppers, cross trainers, and treadmills. There is a large selection of resistance machines, and a free weights area that includes an Olympics bar, all housed in one large, open space that is fully air-conditioned and equipped with entertainment systems.

You do not need to be a member to attend the gym, and sessions cost just £3.

Fitness Classes

Morton Leisure Centre has a dedicated studio available for fitness classes. Classes start at £3 and are available to attend on a one-off basis, though it’s best to check in advance if pre-booking is required. Fitness classes include Zumba and Yoga, with water aerobics classes held in the pool.

Swimming Pools

The pool at Morton Leisure Centre is popular with local disability groups thanks to a range of features that improve accessibility. This includes a moveable floor that can be raised as required and a poolside hoist. The pool is 20m long with four lanes and holds sessions each day at set times for various swimming activities.

These include adult only swimming, family swimming, parent and toddler swimming and women only swimming. The pool also has a large inflatable that is used during some sessions, providing a bouncy structure for children to explore on the water. It is worth noting that as the pool is also part of the school’s facilities, it is not open to the public all day every day, so do check swim times in advance of your visit.

Features for Kids

The pool is available to hire for birthday parties and includes the use of the large inflatable. Swimming lessons for children are provided here, and the gym is open to juniors for just £2.50.
