Dalton Leisure Centre

Dalton Leisure Centre, in the southern lakes peninsulas, is one of the best equipped leisure centres in Cumbria. Home to a free form swimming pool with a children’s splash zone and toddler pool, it’s an ideal place to visit with children.

Furthermore, adults with a keen sense of fitness are well catered for here, with separate cardiovascular and resistance gyms, three squash courts, and two fitness studios offering a full range of classes. Outside the centre there is a huge play area, and the centre is home to a small café.

Gym

There are two separate gyms at Dalton Leisure Centre. The cardiovascular gym is housed within a fully air-conditioned mirrored studio and features an excellent range of machines, including an Octane Fitness Lateral X Elliptical cross trainer that was introduced in 2016 and is understood to burn more calories and provide a more intense workout than a standard cross trainer. Many of the machines include heart rate monitors to help you keep track of your progress.

The resistance gym includes both free weights and resistance machines, such as a bench press and a cross over machine. For both gyms you must complete an induction session before you can use the machines unsupervised, which costs £20. Membership is not required and once you complete your induction you can use the equipment for just £4 per session.

Fitness Classes

Dalton Leisure Centre has an excellent range of fitness classes that are held in its purpose-built aerobics studio. This includes Clubbercise, which is an aerobics workout under disco lights with music and glow sticks. Other classes include yoga, step aerobics, and Zumba. In addition, the centre has a separate studio dedicated for spinning classes, and aquacise classes are held in the pool. Classes cost between £3 and £5 and must be booked in advance.

Swimming Pools

The swimming pool at Dalton Leisure Centre is free form, offering more freedom than traditional lane pools, making it ideal for families with children. There is a separate toddler paddling pool complete with a slide, and adjacent to the pool you will find the Splash Zone. This wet play area features overhead showers, tipping buckets, and interactive panels with puzzles and games to play.

Sessions at the pool are timetabled, and along with general swim sessions, there is adult-only swimming, over-50s swimming, ladies-only swimming, and parent and toddler splash sessions. Swimming lessons are also available for both children and adults.

Squash

There are three squash courts at Dalton Leisure Centre. Two glass-backed courts and one closed court. All courts can be booked with equipment available to hire. A 40-minute session costs £4 off peak and £4.65 peak time per player. Racket and ball hire costs £1.80.

Features for Kids

The pool can be hired for children’s birthday parties and includes the use of an adjacent lounge area for party food. Outside the centre there is a large playground featuring an excellent range of play equipment and it is free to use.

Other Features

The centre has a solarium with a standup sunbed. Prices start at £3.20 for non-members for 3-minutes. There is also a small licensed café bar serving a selection of hot and cold light meals and snacks.
