Sports Trek Gym at Embleton Spa Hotel

The tiny hamlet of Embleton, just off the A66 between Cockermouth and Keswick, might not seem like the obvious location for a gym and pool, but Sports Trek Gym is a very popular facility with local residents. The gym is housed in part of the Embleton Spa Hotel, and whilst guests of the hotel do have access to the facilities, it is managed by Sports Trek Coaching, who offer a membership scheme. In addition to the gym, there is a pool and steam room, whilst the restaurant and bar at the hotel are open to non-residents.

Sports Trek Coaching was established in the 1990s, and originally focused on providing coaching sessions for children in football. In 2012, the company took over the management of the pool at the Embleton Spa Hotel, and in 2013, former meeting rooms at the hotel were converted into the gym that is present today. In addition to running the gym and pool, the company maintains its core focus of providing sports coaching sessions and runs football coaching sessions at Cockermouth Leisure Centre.

Equipment

The gym was created in 2013, and is therefore a fairly modern space, spread over two floors. This is not the largest gym in the area with just 16 stations, but the equipment is good quality and supplied by Sports Art Fitness. You will find all of the basics here with rowing machines, treadmills, cross trainers, bikes, and a step machine for cardiovascular training. For resistance and strength training you will find a lat machine, chest and shoulder press, and an abdominal crunch / back extension machine. There is also a small area for stretching with yoga balls and suspension training equipment.

The gym is available for members and hotel residents only.

Personal Training

As part of the membership fee, all members receive a free fitness test when they sign up. The tests enable the personal trainers at the gym to work with you to create an action plan. These tests are repeated five times over a one-year period.

Facilities

Sports Trek Coaching also manage the pool and steam room at Embleton Spa Hotel, and membership fees include the use of the pool. However, this is limited to set times, when the pool is not in use for the local swimming school. The pool is also available at set times each day for private hire by members of the public, starting at £20. The pool is 14-metres long and heated to 30-degrees. There is also a small steam room adjacent to the pool.

Other Features

The hotel that houses the Sports Trek Gym has a restaurant and bar that is open to members of the public. The restaurant has a large outdoor terrace with views of the western fells.
